Plymouth v Charlton | Sat 06 Apr | 3pm KO | Match Preview, Predictions, News & Views

Plymouth Argyle v Charlton Athletic
Saturday 6th April 2019 … 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Charles Breakspear (Surrey)*

Introduction
Charlton return to the road for two games on the trot this week in what’ll be the last double header away from the Valley this regular season… Last time out saw the Addicks hosting Bradford City and you could argue that it was a game of two sides going through the motions, a 1-0 victory for the side from South East London would cement our Play-Off hopes even further, yet a trip to England’s most Southern league team awaiting tomorrow means that a bad run of form could still end our season prematurely

The Opposition
Name: Plymouth Argyle | Manager: Derek Adams
Ground: Home Park

If there is a lesson to be learnt for the Pilgrims over the last two seasons it is that they should stop handing the other twenty three teams in League One a head start – Quite simply its showing off, its stressful for the fans and as proven these last two season its likely to leave Plymouth without any reward for their efforts.

A late start last season would see Plymouth picking up just a single victory in the first three months of the season, a run of form would take them from relegation trouble to the cusp of the Play-Offs… They would ultimately fall short (paying a harsh price for the early season form) yet having recovered you’d expect them to once again challenge for the top six from the off this season.

Once again though that wasn’t the case and for the Pilgrims it was a case of déjà vu; just the one win in the first three months would leave them rooted to the bottom of the table meaning that Derek Adams surely had to be at risk of losing his job – Plymouth though once again showed loyalty to the man who got them promoted and despite being in a relegation battle that involves half the league, should have enough quality to ensure that their fans enjoy another season in League One next term.

Charlton Team News
It wouldn’t be right without mentioning that the team to beat Plymouth to the Play-Offs last term were none other than ourselves, and I make that mention not as a gloat yet instead to highlight the impressive achievements from Lee Bowyer to continue on from the disappointment of last May – Reason being is that out of the top four teams not to be promoted last season, we’re the only side going for promotion once more, and arent involved in a relegation battle of our own.

Of course our season could have been much better had we not faced an endless amount of injuries yet now the Medical team can take a well earned (yet no doubt brief) break as all first-teamers are back in training; Jake Forster-Caskey and Lewis Page finally returned to full training this week, and whilst it may be some time before we see Jake; Lewis Page himself could be ready in a matter of weeks to challenge for the full back spot

Phillips
Solly | Bauer | Pearce | Purrington
Cullen | Bielik | Aribo
Williams
Taylor | Vetokele

Substitutes Bench: Maxwell | Dijksteel | Sarr | Lapslie | Reeves | Fosu | Parker

Prediction
For the first time this season it must be nice for Lee to have the ultimate selection headache and with the Play-Offs all but secure it’s a chance to rotate players and keep match sharpness at a premium – A maximum of four more wins are all that is required, yet we cant allow complacency to show in our performances, the Play-Off winners usually end up being the most in-form team so lets go for ten wins from ten!!

Ref is either a massive Palace or Man United fan as he's from Surrey.

Interestingly this season he has reffed 15 games in L1 and awarded 6 penalties. He has dished out 41 yellows and just one Yellow to Red. No other reds.
Overall this season he has reffed 39 games across competitions - 123 Yellows, 4 Y/R and 8 Straight Reds and awarded 15 penalties.

He reffed our EFL Trophy game vs Swansea U23's dishing out 5 yellows as we lost 1-0. He also reffed our 2-0 vs Gillingham with just one Yellow card.

Seems a fair ref based on his stats and as such this should be a good game for our Lyle, he will probably get a yellow, but could also win a penalty too.

He was also the referee for the Gillingham and Swansea games at the Valley this season and three games last year

In total he's given 18 yellow cards in those five games

    Definitely a Palace fan!!

First time 'I've not been confident in a while but I just really struggle to see us winning this one. Gonna need a much better performance than Bradford and we haven't seemed to have won many away games recently. Just got the feel of a draw or narrow loss to me.

    Good preview as ever

Another tight result, a narrow win or draw I expect

Will Bowyer rotate the pack, looking for more attacking thrust, as he'll be aware that we're not clicking in attack at the moment, and will need to be better in the playoffs

This is one that we really have to be up for - but we have a play off place  virtually secured and second is highly unlikely. I have a feeling we are going to lose  this one.

Not confident at all about this one. We seem to be going through the motions which may not be enough for a fired up Plymouth side who should easily keep clear of trouble. Goals are our problem so to buck the trend 3-2 to Plymouth as we are due a loss.

Great review! (as always!)  2-0 to us, Tip of the hat to our travellers.  COYRS!

agree with the chat on ChLive last night, there's no need to risk Bielik at this stage .. give Parker a run out, keep Dijk at right back, perhaps rest the fragile Williams for a potentially tough away game .. Lapslie and Reeves in midfield .. mix up the rested and the match fit ready for the play offs .. will be a hard game and I'd be happy with another draw

our average for this ref in the Gills game was 7.03 which is well above the overall ref average of 5.90
Believe me that has to be a one off because he Is not often that good.

Low scoring draw.....got 1-1 written all over it.
The Pilgrims are currently having good home form.

A tricky game, so not unhappy with an honourable draw

Should be an open game as both clubs anxious for the points. Charlton usually more "up for it" against stronger opposition (not playing bottom of the league like last week). 1-2 to the Reds.
