I’d have taken 3-1 when I saw the starting line up and couldnt see where the goals would come from. Good if wasteful first 20 minutes but from then on we were rubbish. We got lucky that it was the gas we were playing today as they were truly awful. Why are we not allowed to try to score again when we take the lead? It’s getting really frustrating. I wasn’t entertained today. Don’t get me wrong I’m grateful for the win and I’d take a few more poor performances that take the points to get out of this rubbish league but we are potentially so much better than some of the chuff we are turning out. Sorry to go all Victor Meldrew. I’m genuinely chuffed with the points but I’m just not getting our mindset at the moment. I hope Ajose is good at something else as he’s not going to be a pro footballer much longer. Utter waste of space. And Taylor really really makes Grant look good cos when he’s not alongside him he’s bang ordinary although to his credit he tried hard today. MOM for me was Steer for that assist and that save. Proper game changers. Atmosphere was tepid too.6

Whenever the opposition keeping goes up I'm hoping we break and we score into an empty goal. Finally it happened.
We didn't seem to be at the races today but scored three, created other chances (Lapslie, Ajose) and won.
Missed Taylor obviously but also Cullen. Bielik not at his best but he's not a playmaker.
Ward the irritating so and so he always was against us. The touch to bring down Steer's pass was sublime and the lob wasn't bad either.
We seemed to lose shape and couldn't work out Rovers change in formation.
Had Ward for first goal and 3-1 so no contribution to @bobmunro s pension fund this week.
Bristol Rovers have a distinctive kit, it doesn't clash with ours, why wear yellow? They deserved to lose for that alone but they weren't all that.5 -

Strange afternoon. Fairly flat around the place for much of the time yet accompanying it was two pieces of real excitement for the first and third goals.
We are lost as an offensive team without Lyle, which makes it such an irony we scored three goals.
Cannot fault a single players commitment but we turned over the ball so cheaply time and time again, so frustrating. Fortunately Rovers were a poor outfit. I really don’t want to play another game with Solly at left back.
Very very pleased with securing a win. Looking at that table it would have been pretty grim viewing had we been turned over today.14 -

A curate's egg mashed into a dogs dinner of a game. With a fun finish and three juicy points. It was going to be 2-2 or 3-1 at the end, and under Robinson it would probably have remained at 1-1 after a nice Bristol Rovers equaliser.
A funny old game as they say, it is worth repeating that all the teams at this level have enough to hurt ya...if you let them.
I thought that once again the other manager deployed substitutes well, Bowyer had quite limited options, and the introduction of Rodman for Rovers might have just got them an equaliser at the end. Instead we have the grin inducing glory of their keeper going up, right decision, but we got the breakaway and with all of us grinning more widely Karlan (who had an average game otherwise) finished it off.
Some nice specifics in the match, two good saves by Steer, especially an outstanding 'strong hand' save in the first half. Steer also provided an excellent release, and assist, for Ward's goal which he took really well. Steer had one weak punch in the game but otherwise played well, even getting a touch on their goal.
Worth remembering that Solly continues to play out of position, and it is easy to take the great little man for granted, he did well. better than Anfernee, although Djiksteel stuck to it, and when he does make an error it is rarely crucial, but he still pops up when a crucial intervention is needed.
Bauer and Steer were rock solid mainly and they are our best CB pairing. In about the eighth minute Lapslie missed a chance to put us ahead after a quite dazzling attack, but he didn't put his foot through the ball and it was blocked, however I thought young George played well. Aribo and Ward are neck and neck for MOM. The best Ward has played for us, and a lovely goal, Aribo exudes class at this level and he too scored a decent goal.
Ajose is no Lyle Taylor leading the line, and no Cullen on set pieces either, but he wasn't particularly moody today, and Karlan is chasing down Taylor as top scorer.
The game overall was patchy, with Bristol Rovers certainly having some good spells of play. However Rovers are low on confidence right now, and we might not have done so well against a better team today because of some of our sustained rather lethargic play in periods of the game.
Nobody can moan though, three points at home is what we demanded and what was delivered, we will play like Brazil some other game.4 -
I actually thought Ajose had a good game today. His runs stretched their defence all over the shop and created gaps for others. Lapslie missed an absolute sitter from Nicky's work too.8

Solid win won from midfield rather than Grant and Ajose. Ajose first half good and second half poor. God was Taylor missed up front and with him Grant looks not so good. Back four and midfield especially Ward and Pearce were solid.Ward injects creativity and zip and attitude and fires things up ever so well. Hope he plays Tuesday. With Taylor back we will be better than today and we will need to be. We made hard work of that but who cares; we are still in the pack and have closed the gap.0

Good to see Steer getting some good reviews. I'd felt that some people had forgotten that Ben Amos got off to a slow start with us too.8

Far from a classic that one. Rovers could have added 2 more to the scoreline in the first half were it not for Steers strong one handed save and a narrowly missed cross in the box. We seemed to take our foot off the gas after we scored and Rovers equalised with a pile driver from Martin. As usual the last few minutes were butt clenching and Steers tip over the bar kept us in front . With the keeper up for the resulting corner we managed to squirm it into Fosus path ( who I thought controlled the ball with his arm ) and sent it clear for Grant to get the 3rd.0

Bielik getting a few Pelters today but aside from a couple of glaring errors I thought he was solid. Won plenty in the tackle and in the air and his touch was generally very good. Think people focus on one or two mistakes and label him as having a stinker12

A pretty poor game but a deserved three points against a weak Bristol Rovers team.
A good first 25 minutes but we dropped off and I felt that we were a little fortunate to be ahead at the break. The second half was scrappy and the fear was that the lack of a third killer goal might lead to a late siege and and equaliser. Fortunately, Rovers were largely powder puff and Steer’s goal was never seriously threatened - although it didn’t feel like that in the last 10 minutes.
I thought that Steer did very well, with an excellent save after his assist for Ward’s goal, but there weren’t really any other standout performances. We were a little disjointed in midfield, with Aribo, Bielik and Lapslie all having distinctly average games. We certainly missed Josh Cullen’s overall quality and ability to knit the play together.
Jamie Ward had some good moments, even if a number of his flicks and first time balls around the corner didn’t quite come off. His delayed departure from the field was a close second behind his goal in terms of sheer panache, with the removal of his shin pads the cherry on the cake. I’m struggling to remember when (if ever) we had a wind up merchant in his class.
Up front, we were largely (and predictably) blunt and lacking in ideas and focus in Lyle Taylor’s absence. Happily, he’ll be back on Tuesday and we are another three points to the good in his absence.
Three tough successive away games now follow in the league before we entertain the Dons and our friends from the Medway Riviera prior to the punishing Christmas and New Year Schedule. Let’s hope for a decent result at Burton to consolidate ourselves in the top 6 and get a little closer to the leading pack.8 -

Steer definitely did have a slow start, but he's looking the part now. Not as good as Amos yet (he was the best keeper we've had down there for years) but I think he's starting to set himself apart from Dillon a little bit now.
He's getting better protection now as well. We had to do far too much defending inside our penalty area today, but they didn't get get many shots past the various bodies throwing themselves into blocks, so what the defending lacked in assuredness it made up for with commitment.
Bielek does not look as good at DM as he does at CB, but he did the job well enough overall. Bauer was like he's never been gone and Pearce is mister consistency. Solly, likewise was his usual 7 out 10. Iron Willy got exposed a couple of times early on, notably for the goal, but I think the was partly Lapslie not covering him well enough, as the game wore on he got better and he's getting forward more. Lapslie staked a decent claim again, while still showing his inexperience a few times. Aribo is really improving defensively and still has that Mortimer like ability to just effortless go past people without seemingly doing that much with the ball. Ward isn't necessarily bossing games, but he's got a touch of class about him and his experience and spikey personality adds something.
Grant didn't have much come of for him until the very end there, but he took it well and worked hard. Ajose worked hard too, but I always feel there is something slightly half-hearted about his efforts. He certainly can't or won't put himself about the way Taylor and does and ultimately I think the performance looked a bit mediocre purely because we didn't have Taylor there to hold the ball up and build our attacks around. Ajose is 10 times better than he was last season though and it wouldn't be fair to expect him to totally fill Taylor's boots.
Job done in the end, you can't win them all at a canter but that's 3 on the spin in the league and another step in the right direction. Very much looking forward to the Pompey game to see how we fair against one of the best sides in the division because I think we can match them at the very least. Such a shame we've lost Cullen, his range of passing is another thing that we miss more than a little bit.5 -
