relegation setback ? pah, turnover and attendances may go up

thinking about the likelihood of db going to west ham for £18m or more and one or two others going for a couple of bob also made me wonder whether, despite the decrease in tv money, the business that is charlton athletic may actually see an increase in its turnover next year...then i turned to the aggregate attendance and thought that if we manage say a 23k average gate for league games, roughly 4k down on last season, we could still see an increase in overall attendance because there are 4 extra games...then there's the two cup competitions, a home game against pl opposition or a promotion rival could attract a near sell out, whereas before anything close to 20k would have been deemed a result...

  • your forgetting the biggest backer of all, tv money. Plus sponsorship levels, advertising rates, corporate demand for lounges, boxes, ticketing prices will be much lower across the board
  • the parachute money will mean the loss isn't 100%...there will be live tv games, maybe not generating the same sort of income but income from sales of players could be around the £20m level and a greater aggregate attendance could mean a bigger matchday spend by fans, particularly if a slightly lower gate means more of us think we can actually get to the bar rather than take one look at the mass of people already there and dont bother...

which won't arrive in one lump, will be split over a 2-4 year period
  • We may get slightly more people through the gates due to the extra games but they will be paying less for their tickets. Whereas before we had Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, lIverpool, spurs, west ham bringing 3k fans paying 35 quid for their tickets, i doubt our top price ticket will be much more than 25-30 for just the Palace game.

so that's 6 games with say 7k paying an extra tenner which equates to a princely £420,000 down...if romm goes for the reported £500k, that'll cover that...
  • I agree with this and have said all along the DB sale + parachute money means no worries for this year - irrespective of when the transfer is paid.

However we need to re-sign whoever Pardew wants to keep and keep buying to fill out the squad - especially the midfield.

Assuming we're in the top two at Christmas this should be an enjoyable year.

Yeah fair enough i can see where you're coming from but we will obviously be losing a lot of money hence the employees who were laid off. The Bent sale will obviously cover that this season, it's if we don't go straight back up that the problems will arise.
We need to make sure we find the next D.Bent (Sharp or Eastwood) cheaply so we have another 10-12m plus player on our hands in a couple of years time.
  • does the away team generate/get any income ?...we've got 4 more away games as well...

and with the likelihood that we might even be winning at half-time in more games next season, perhaps more fans will actually feel like rushing to the bar for a pint...last season we were ahead at half time only 3 times in the league (man city, fulham and west ham) and once in the carling cup (bolton)...you never know, somebody might even come up with the novel idea of selling beer in plastic bottles so it can speed things up...
  • did we get anything from parker moving again,or was it just for the previous sale?

But they will be accounted for in the year of the sale. They will probably show as debtors on the balance sheet

I will this season for the simple reason i will now be able to to breathe as it'll be non smoking on the concourses.
  • and, i suspect, a winning team will sell more merchandising than a losing one...

the club could make more income by selling niccorette gum from the food/drink outlets.

LOL you do make me laugh.
  • laugh ?, i suspect i'm making you rich with all these posts...you'll be selling the site to google at this rate and retiring to the south of france on the proceeds...
  • i see the programme has caught up with the fact that at the average 22k gate so far (before saturday's 24k) charlton are on line for their biggest aggregate gate since 1955/56...

The key word being AGGREGATE not AVERAGE.

We play 46 games, 23 at home,in this division so that is why the AGGREGATE is likely to be higher than when we played 38 and 19 respectively as you said in the original post but as most of that is ST sales that does not mean higher income.
  • Ben do we know how many ST's were sold, pre season, it was quoted as 17,000 upto eo May, did anyone else come in? Ave attendance will end up around 22,500 I reckon.
  • With approximately 3,000 in the South Jimmy Seed Stand and 17,000 season ticket holders = 20,000 for saturday's match. How come the 24,000+ attendance? There did seem less in teh home areas than previous.

  • You notice things when you're doing the flag, and one thing was there were clusters of empty seats in the east stand

It was 17,500 at beginning of season and we've been selling a few since. Not sure of exact number now but will ask.

Rain plus Xmas plus poor home frm equals so no shows. Sure we would have had over 25,000 if the weather hadn't been so bad.
  • ur forgetting piss poor home form....

    :P
  • oh and the fireworks at Charlton house.
