Cosworths, RS turbos, GTis, Skylines, Imprezas, old school Ford's, the occasional Imports and the insane amount of strap money spent by nutters on turning a heap of shite old ford Mexico into a fire breathing, screaming, full fat animal of a car that would set car alarms off just by driving in the same postcode.

We've had the dream, unattainable car thread. How's about your favourite, boy-racer motor from your youth

Mine is the Peugeot 1.9 GTi, closely beating the RS Escort Cosworth into 2nd place as too many spoilt rich boys had them. I was only jealous!


Insurance used to be 3 times what the car cost for tpft, fully comp was a pipe dream!

I go back a bit further!

The must have boy races in my yoof were:

Triumph Dolomite Sprint
Triumph Spitfire - especially GT6
Triumph Stag
Mini Cooper S
Escort Mexico
Ford Capri 3 litre then the 2.8 injection
MGB GT
Ford Cortina Mk2 1600E

Of those I owned only one - a 1600E.

But I did beat all my mates with their Triumphs and had one of these:



It was a glorious car - and remarkably reliable. I had it for three years and sold it for about what I paid for it - £1500!

If only I'd kept it.

My mate had a lime green mk1 Mexico, it was the nuts. He sold it and bought an Astra GTE, the early box shaped one and always regretted it.

Another mate had a lovely 2tr MK 2 Capri Ghia. He would regularly take us to Southend for the night at breakneck speed. We were coming back one night and ran out of petrol just before the Blackwall tunnel. We realised you got free assistance if you broke down in the tunnel itself so pushed it to the first emergency telephone inside and rang the old bill. They made us wait on the walkway while they took the driver to fill up a sprint can by my mate was so pissed, we had to hide him on the floor in the back with a blanket over him.

Unbelievable coincidence - the favourite car thread led me to Google Sierra Cosworths, just for old times sake and they're going for just under £45k these days.....

I had a Peugeot 205 1.9 (company car). It was a fantastic car to drive. I remember going up to the Highlands for a birthday weekend, and one of the other guests was a rally navigator. He owned one and we followed him around some backroads. Follow the taillights was the instruction, and it was quite a ride.

We owned and drove an MGB GT V8 for 20 years, lovely car and surprised many off the lights as other drivers didn’t realise there was a V8 engine under the bonnet, great fun especially in the wet

Early 90's my boss had a black 4x4 Cosy (Like Spender's car) he got banned for 6 months and I got to use it. Lovely car. No speed cameras in them days, used to work in B'ham and would wear light blue shirt and every car moved out the way. Did B'ham to Greenwich in 1hr 35mins once.

First car? Wow!

I started low! Ford Anglia 105E - cost me £90 and the insurance was £70 from the insurance broker on Plumstead Common Road, top of Burrage Road. The reg was BCG 811 C and I remember the joker behind the counter saying "is it the injection model?". How I didn't laugh as I handed over the £70.

Not on the same level as you guys with cosworths or mexicos but my first "sporty" looking car was the mighty MG Metro, followed shortly after with (when I realised that the floor on the driver's side had rust holes so rain water was coming in) with MG Metro Turbo (imagine multiple shit emojis) I had it for about 8 months of which most of that was in the garage . I cut my losses and bought a Citreon AX GT mk2, what a fantastic car, it only had a 1.4 engine but was no weight (which subsequently means no/or very little crash protection) but that didn't seem to matter in the early 90s.

Now I drive a Kia Niro PHEV

Favourite was my Lupo GTI. Such a cool little car imo, rare and handled like a go kart. Definitely got attention wherever it went.

Had a Clio RS 172 and Ibiza Cupra. Clio was brilliant and was a dream around the Nurburgring. Cupra was fun in straight lines but wouldn't go around corners for anyone or anything.

My mate had a Vauxhall firenza - based on the Viva. Pretty crap car but seemed fun back in the day.

The Carlton Cosworth was a great car if you wanted performance and you had no cash to spend.

More into my sports bikes than cars, however when I was younger my first car was a MK2 1966 Triumph Spitfire, that me and my old man renovated. I lost track of the amount of time it would spin coming out of roundabouts especially in the wet. Then my dad 'borrowed' it and wrote it off for me, pissed off his tits.
Another cracking car I had was a 1975 Mini 1275 GT Clubman, that i bought in 1987, had it tuned by Sanspeed/Janspeed? in Bexleyheath, I spent a fortune tuning it up.
It used to go like stink, in fact I would sit at the traffic light grand prix, and when they went red, I would have to pull away in second gear or it would just wheel spin, I didn't think to spend a bit of dough on decent tyres. I would love one now. Great cars

Never owned a hot hatch, but my first car was a Mk1 Astra, so always fancied a GTe version of one of them. Pretty rare these days though, heard there were only something like 30 still on the road.
