What DM said. They even do guided hunts there. With a 5 year old you could pop out to one of the shops early doors, buy a nice ammonite and help your lad 'find' it in the clays. He wont forget that in a hurry.

Kimmeridge Bay may be a bit too far from you (It's towards Wareham), but worth looking at. Plenty of fossils to pick up and plenty to find on the clay beds (look at tide times if going - there's also a fossil collection in the village).
Chesil Beach. Bivalves literally lying on the beach amongst the pebbles
Lyme Regis is good for bigger fossils, but you tend to only find pieces unless you're organised, and have tools
A big chunk of Chesil beach is closed through the summer to protect nesting Terns. I don't think it's that much that a 5 year old would feel restricted though.
I live 3 miles fromLulworth Cove, if the range walks are open try Fossil Woods to the left Lulworth as you face the sea, Monkey World & The Dorchester Museum are nearby would be great for a 5 year old + his dad/GDad
Take a day off from fossels and visit the Swanage Railway for a trip to Corfe and the castle, there are at least 3 Charlton supporters who are volunteers on the railway.
Not for this week but the O2 have a walking with dianosaurs in a couple of weeks. £30 for a family of four. Looks brilliant for kids if they wouldn't be terrified.
