Just watching the analysis of the Portugal game (obviously didn't watch the game so bare that in mind) first thought on that Ronaldo one - it's off the ball which is what makes it dodgy - I've seen reds given for that but probably a yellow card - but what a silly silly boy getting involved in that kind of thing - that could have ended his world cup if it was red.
The Gambian ref and his VAR team in the France v Australia match showed how it can work well. Both pens tonight the ref didn't give them - rightly then but VAR wrongly didn't just accept the decision and made him look at it again - and ref was too weak from there on.
FIFA don't need so many refs now, so send the rubbish home!
I thought VAR was ok up until now, but tonight it was a farce
Said it before the Tournament
VAR is going to be used by the wrong officials, guys who arent used to the speed of the game from their Domestic Leagues and arent going to be used to the technology so wont know how to use it properly
Are you saying they don’t use VAR in the Paraguayan first division?!!!!
Do they have electricity in some of the countries that have Referee's representing them?
If Ronaldo had scored the penalty, they would have topped the group
As for the potential red card, personally I don't think it should be a red card, but when you compare it with say Beckham's kick out against Argentina, if one's a red, both should be reds
Watched both games live on two computers with a group of 40 Spanish teenagers on a school trip to Romania. Completely bonkers scenes here as you can imagine!
Neither were reds - there was no intent to hurt the player from Ronaldo - He fell into the Iranian defender for the pen and VAR should have left it there! Whilst the ref was weak and out of his depth, the culprits for making the game a farce was actually the VAR team tonight!

What was the intent then Muttley? Was he trying to win the ball? (genuine question i've only seen one replay and I don't know where the ball was on the pitch at the time)
When they said Boris Johnson was sent away on urgent business to avoid voting on Heathrow expansion, I didn't realise he was being sent to run the VAR booth!

I entirely disagree. Was a clear penalty for a foul on Ronaldo, and a clear elbow thrown at the face of the Iranian player by Ronaldo. Should've been a penalty (given by the ref) and a red card (not given by ref).
The only thing I would not have done if I was in control of the VAR room was get them to have a look at the Iranian penalty. There wasn't an obvious error in the original decision, although the ball did hit the hand in an unnatural position.
He was trying to brush past the player to get to the ball and caught him mildly - no way a sending off! As for the penalty he went off the ground towards the defender before the defender touched him.

I don't think you can say it was an unnatural position, as the player was with another player in a close tussle and off balance
It's not as if he was by himself in the box with his hand out.

Sure but if it had been given by the referee in real time, the replay show quite conclusively that he had his hand above his head and the ball hit the same hand. I don't think Portugal could argue it if it was given. Either way, it wasn't a clear and obvious error and VAR shouldn't have been used in that situation.
Putting VAR aside i think the biggest thing to come out of tonights games is that both Portugal and Spain look average which therefore leaves me to conclude that football is definitely coming home.

He had no intent to brush the player off the ball he looked at him and remembered seeing Izale McLeod Vs Northwich and decided to try it himself.
He was chasing as good players do - he was unlikely to get the ball first but he could have harried the keeper into an error. There has to be intent surely. He was moving faster than the opponent who was trying to hold him up and brushed him away. It was a foul, but no more. I wouldn't even have booked him, but again, the ref was too weak after VAR pulled it up! It was a theme tonight.
And it was never an unnatural position for the handball - unless we were watching Riverdance!
Ronaldo penalty decision correct. Ronaldo yellow probably correct as he was only trying to get past the defender who made the most of it. Iran penalty incorrect. Where is Cedrics arm supposed to go? And from point blank range too. Shameful theatrics from a lot of the players in that game, the ref lost the plot and VAR had a fit. All good entertainment though. I was fully for VAR and still am but tonight’s shambles showed that it can be a bit farcical.

fair enough he was chasing - again - how far away was the ball? a few feet? He was near the half way line right?
Again - genuine questions not digging but I have a picture in my mind of where I think the ball likely was and what i am getting at is there may have been some intent if he new the ball was too far away and he was acting a bit petulant and frustrated - perhaps at a poor pass? i didn't see it though so I don't know...
The ball was with the goalkeeper and there was no chance of Ronaldo catching it. Iranian player did make a meal of the contact but that doesn't excuse the fact that he has a little look and throws his elbow out as he goes past.
I don't like Ronaldo, but it is an example of what a great player he is - the bit about him being some distance from the ball I mean, It is what you want your players to do late in the game - chase the ball down - put the keeper under pressure.
This WC has been excellent so far and the wonderful VAR has enriched the experience. The human part of VAR still needs to catch up with the technology. By the Euro's we will wonder how we managed before.

And good attacking football as well (from the small bits I’ve seen), not a single 0-0 yet

Stinks of sour grapes because they didn't hold onto their lead and VAR is the easy target.
