Thought we'd be posh and use the west-stand on Saturday- we were seated in Block M, Row S, seats 111/112. We actually got stared at and some mumbling after we dared shouting our support for the team; I think it was something outrageous like "C'mon you 'addicks". Sat nearer the front in the second half with acouple of other "Noisier" addicks and had acouple of kids smiling and trying to join in with our "we are the N block.......". Sorry; never again !

I've sat in The West Upper for years and there's a good mix up there....some great Addicks that have been around for many years and support the team every bit as much as anyone else.Mostly a bit older that's true but I know a lot of them who were old Covered End Lads.
I don't much like this devisive stuff that tries to make out that unless you're in The North Stand that you're somehow inferior....or not as good a fan.
I love it in The West Upper the view is incredible and as nowadays I go 'primarily' to WATCH the game I can't understand anyone wanting to watch a game(by choice that is) from behind the goal.
And there's nothing posh about the West Stand or it's fans P.
[cite]Posted By: Riscardo[/cite]Sat in the West Stand on Saturday.
I have to say the whole atmosphere there is disappointing.
I was queuing for tickets when you and Jim were climbing the steps singing Wemberley....
Well it was the Third Round of the cup. Didnt hear it sung once all game. Went with a spring in my step and thought fcuk it. Took all of 10 minutes siting in the West to have the stuffing knocked out of me. There was no spontaniousness about sitting there. Not one person shouted out anything, not anything. It's football ffs.
Soundas, not even suggesting that you are less of a "fan" in the WestStand, just that myself and Sandra were very disappointed at the reaction we both got for "daring" to shout out support for our team. Seriously, it was quieter than a Palace crowd up in the Gods !
I sat in the west for the Reading game which, you may recall, we won. It is like a library. We got told to shut up twice for singing. We didn't of course.
Never EVER heard of anyone being told to not sing in The West Upper....sorry but I simply don't believe you....NO ONE would ever stop you...that's simply untrue....unless you were using some bad language maybe or just making a moronic noise...as there are quite a few families up there, I'd like to know who asked you and why....there's always two sides to every story.
There's the odd pocket of younger fans who do sing...though no one would suggest it's like the Covered End....but that's the beauty of it, you can be more sedate and study the game more.
I spent years on The Covered End making more noise than anyone, just ask anyone who knows me from those days.Air horns(the first ever at The Valley), drums, rattles etc....but you DO change as you will one day find out and you'll most likely want to sit elsewhere a bit more laid back...I am getting sick and tired of having to justify West Standers and the way some folk talk about us....we are all different....but this shitty inference that we are somehow less worthy than the rest of you get's on my tyts milla!
I've MORE than served my time in The Covered End, as have many of us up there, and we deserve a bit of respect now we've moved on to pastures new... maybe see you in The West Upper in a few years mate.....you'll be surprised at how you change and see things differently....and it'll happen to you sooner than you think, so all I can say is make the most of the fantastic times you're having now with all your youthful energy.....just remember, it wont be with you for ever.
Nah it was west lower near the tunnel. I think that section may be all comps but a late middle aged couple in front asked us to stop. It was standard fare, no swearing or derogatory(sp?) remarks at all.
I woud also like to add that none of you exactly chose the best game to go to to see any part of the ground at it's most enthusiastic or passionate...even The North Upper was pretty quiet on Saturday....when the ground is buzzing and full there's quite an atmosphere in The West Upper.
In fairness it was a limp affair all round...even the Norwich 3,000 were somewhat subdued.
On a normal match day there's plenty of shouting and comments going on in The West Upper as in any football crowd...we are no different from any other club in that regard....the difference is of course there's not much 'co-ordinated' chanting or singing...so what!
[cite]Posted By: SoundAsa£[/cite]Shouting at the players from up in the gods of the West Upper is like pissing into the wind...no one would hear you pitchside.
i don't think anyone has said you are a "less" supporter because you sit in the West, infact the ticket prices are dearer up there (I think) so if anything you are "more" of a supporter of Charlton Athletic than I !! The point I'm making is that we got stared at, and "mumbled" at (sorry, can't think of the right phrase to use there) because we were "making a noise". We tried sitting there as an experiment; it didn't work, so I'll be happy (if thats possible) back in J Block on Saturday. And my fingers might have thawed out by then from that bloody cold "concourse" in the open-air !
If I have upset you or any of the people in the West Stand I send full apolgies. As I stated in my last message, it was the first time I'd sat there and it was V.Quite. I also appreciate that it wasn't a "noisy" game elsewhere in the ground either ! Also, please note, that I have pointed out that the people in the West (in general) pay more than any of the rest of us in the "cheaper" seats. ergo; you "support" the club more than I. Everybody has a choice; yours is West- mine North Upper. "Chill out, man !!!! " Keep Smiling.
That's OK P...it's an old debate which has at times got a lot more heated than in this particular thread and some of us...(well me inparticular I admit) get a bit peed off with the 'poor supporters' tag given to West Standers which is something that just isn't true of course.
Did you get my phone message last night?

The West Stand is full of unhappy non clappers.
