Greatest XI in your lifetime (Not CAFC)

Don't doubt this has been done before, but a little light lunchtime thread for you to give us the greatest XI of your lifetime (not charlton, although you are welcome to include Christoph LePoint if you want)

Schmeicheal

Cafu/Thuram Maldini Desailly Roberto Carlos

Ronaldo Gazza Zidane

Messi Bergkamp Cantona

Absolutely no balance and I couldn't decide which of Cafu or Thuram gets the nod at RB.

My era was early 90s onwards

    Banks
    Cohen, Moore, Charlton (J), Wilson
    Stiles, Ball, Charlton (R), Peters
    Hurst, Hunt

    Seriously:

    Schmeichel
    Thuram, Moore, Canavaro, Maldini
    Messi, Maradona, Keane, Best
    Pele, Ronaldo (goofy)

Bench: Banks, Carlos, Ronaldo (C), Cruyff, Muller (G)

Not necessarily the best 11 players in my lifetime but I've tried to go for balance. The bench is pretty strong as well and covers defensive injuries (Keane can play CH and so can Maldini, with another full back on the bench). Might be a question raised over Keane but aside from being an arsehole he was for me the best holding midfielder in my lifetime (close with Viera).

I think even I could manage that team to world domination!!
  • Buffon
    Alves Cannavaro Puyol Roberto Carlos
    Messi Viera Zidane Cristiano Ronaldo
    Pele Ronaldo
  • 90s onwards too for me:

    Schmeichel
Lahm (less exciting than Cafu but more solid defensively in my attacking team!)
    Desailly
Baresi (Desailly for pace and power, Baresi for the intelligence, would compliment each other)
    Maldini
Keane (just ahead of Vieira) - captain
    Xavi
    Cristiano Ronaldo
    Zidane
    Messi
Ronaldo (Brazilian one - incredible before injuries)

    So:

    Schmeichel
    Lahm, Desailly, Baresi, Maldini
    Keane, Xavi
    Messi, Zidane, C.Ronaldo
    Ronaldo

Subs if allowed: Buffon, Koeman, Cafu, Vieira, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Henry (just ahead of Baggio due to pace against tired defences!).
  • Schmeichel
    Lahm Nesta Puyol Maldini

    Makelele
    Zidane Ineista

    Messi Ronaldo

    Ronaldo

    Buffon
    Cole
    Cannavaro
    Keane
    Lampard
    Ronaldinho
    Henry

What's your footballing era? Interesting that you didn't pick anyone from Pele's times and the mid-90's.

And you can't pick 13 players!
  • From mid 70s onwards

    Schmeichel

    Lahm Baresi Desailly Maldini

    Matthaus

    Xavi Zidane

    Maradona C Ronaldo Messi

Quite a defensive back 5 so that the rest of the team would be free to attack. No real centre forward (Fat Ronaldo for Maradona would be that swap if necessary)

    Buffon

    Cafu Baresi Maldini Carlos

    Makelele

    Ronaldiniho Maradona Messi

    Ronaldo Ronaldo

that was off the top of my head, then realised who I'd left out................Zidane, Iniesta, Xavi, Van Basten, Zico, Figo..........could literally go on and on and probably name 3 or 4 teams of totally different players.

Little bit too attacking maybe ;)
  • Born in 1976

    Southall

    Cafu - Baresi - Cannavaro - Maldini

    Matthaus

    Xavi - Iniesta

Maradona - Fat Ronaldo - Messi
  • Schmeichel

    Carlos Alberto Moore Beckenbauer Lahm

    Best Zidane Cruyff

    Messi Pele Ronaldo (C)

Who needs to defend with that side?
  • Anyone that doesn't have C. Ronaldo and Messi should not be allowed to have an opinion

I could equally argue that those of a certain age who can remember the greats of the 60s and 70s shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion if they don't include Moore, Pele and the greatest of them all, Best.

    Great minds and all that.

One mans meat is someone else's poison.
Did you see George Best, Pele or Maradonna play ? Lol

2000ish onward. Probably more emphasis on the last ten years because I'm getting old and I forget stuff. But that's why the likes of
the original Ronaldo, Maldini, and Zidane probably miss out.

    Casillas
    Alves Ramos Chiellini Lahm
    ..........Alonso
    .......Xavi.....Schweinsteiger
    Messi....Drogba......C Ronaldo

If you asked me tomorrow six of those would probably change, which is why I'm not going a bench now but might come back later and do one.

    Subs:
    Buffon
    Iniesta
    David Villa
    Maldini
    Pirlo
    Ronaldo
    Zidane

Memories of the days when teams played their best XIs during the FA Cup, though of course they played the second half with Les Sealey in goal and no Paul Parker.

As for a best world XI, I just can't do it. How to choose between both Ronaldos, Pele, Best Cruyff, Messi, Gullit, Zidane Eusebio etc - and Gerd Mueller, Marco Van Basten and Dennis Bergkamp haven't even got a look-in in the teams picked so far.
