Oh dear Coles run out and 8 still needed with a rabbit coming in at 11 having to face Morkel.
  • 9 down
    Come on the Rey

    Come on Essex!!!!
  • Essex win by 1 wicket.
  • Phew, thank **** for that!

Great game, That shows how good county cricket can be
  • With all due respect to Porter I'm surprised that he bats above Coles a man who has scored at least one first class century.

Coles' batting is erratic though. And he wasn't in the team for this match anyway, he was only a concussion replacement!

Jamie is ferret, he should go in after the rabbits.
However he is a blocker and often goes in nightwatchman, so maybe they though could hold the end up and let TenDo do his stuff whereas Coles might get a bit swing happy.

An interesting ruling, allowing concussion replacements. Correct for the medical reasons, but slightly awkward if the person brought in takes 5 wickets like Coles did!

Middlesex had to bring in a replacement in their match, but as he was a spinner rather than a seamer, wasn't allowed to bowl.

Interesting how he credits playing overseas for much of his bowling improvement
“Just bowling more overs has been the difference, it helped being captain at the beginning of the year and being able to give myself a bowl whenever I wanted.

“I had a busy winter coming into this summer and was bowling a lot at the various competitions I was playing in, not necessarily in games but in nets and I really enjoyed it.

“I took that into this season and with bowling more overs I became more confident.”
  • Great stats, I hope Matt Walker has something similar in front of him when reviewing the season!

Canterbury's seam friendly nature is shown by the complete lack of any specialist spinner other than Denly. Riley for example played 4 matches this season, NONE of them at Canterbury. Similarly only 5 out of Denly's 23 wickets came at Canterbury

Ironically our T20 QF against Lancs at Canterbury was spin friendly and suited their attack more than ours.

Shame the groundsman didn't tell the match committee what he was preparing otherwise we'd have had a different side!

    Or a different pitch ...

Bilbo was a bit scathing about the pitch in the post match interview if memory serves me right.

At the time some were questioning whether that was just a bit of blame deflection from Bilbo after team selection and choosing to bat first.

The Championship stats seem to give some weight to the skipper's concerns.

I haven't looked at the Canterbury cards for the One Day and T20 comps (it was enough of a job doing the CC) but it would be interesting to see how seam and spin fared.

The thing with short-form matches, though, is that it isn't so much spin causing problems but just pace taken off the ball causing the batsmen to force the issue and throwing their wicket away.

Kent have made a big signing - Fred Klaassen.

Well when I say "big" I actually mean a "tall" (6' 4'') 25 year old Netherlands left arm fast bowler who was born in Haywards Heath. He played one match for our 2s this season. Details here:

  • Was about to ask about the World Cup, but of course the ICC in their wisdom aren't allowing any of the smaller countries in...
  • Buzzing for next season now.
  • Anyone know much about him ??

Doesn't appear to have played any first class cricket as yet.

Hopefully Allan Donald took the lead on this signing so maybe he's spotted potential there.
  • I imagine he's more a punt for the white ball team, though the way Donald has improved other bowlers like Podmore and Thomas, who knows.
  • As I say he played a 2s game for us last season so we have had a chance to look at him close hand. The original connection I suspect is probably Roland Lefebvre as he not only coaches in the Netherlands but also has close links to Kent and has acted as guest coach at District sessions here too.
  • Harry Came who, a former Hants graduate, had a prolific season in our 2s scoring four hundreds in the process. Consequently we offered him a two year contract but he has elected to sign as a pro for Hants after all.
