i find, generally, places make their old fashioned too sweet. Love a negroni, and a dry Manhattan.0

Mojito is the worst cocktail. Most places just smash a bit of mint and sugar up in a glass, 50ml (if you're lucky) of Bacardi and top it with soda. You're paying £8+ for a double of shit rum.
I usually have a stirred dirty vodka martini (extra dirty, easy on the vermouth), a rye whisky old fashioned or a manhattan. I like my alcohol mixed with more alcohol. That's a cocktail.2 -
Does a daiquiri count as a cocktail? If so, then thats mine. Got me absolutely smashed a few times in Mexico last year.0

Definitely a cocktail, one of the oldest and greatest rum cocktailsValleyGary said:Does a daiquiri count as a cocktail? If so, then thats mine. Got me absolutely smashed a few times in Mexico last year.

We have a nice Manhattan Sour on our menu, as well as a couple of decent "short, strong and brown" cocktails too.
Rye Whiskey is one of my favourite things to drink, a Canadian Rye with just a barspoon of maple syrup and some bitters, absolute heaven2 -

There was a place near the Harp in Charing Cross that was an italian bar, where you had small plates, they did an amazing maple old fashioned. I've never managed to replicate it.1 - Sponsored links:

I go to the Alchemist quite regularly as it's next to my office, they do great cocktails. I tend to avoid it on a Thursday evening though as it gets very busy.sam3110 said:Some good drinks listed there, negronis and old fashioneds are what I like to call proper bartender drinks.
There are so many great cocktail bars in London nowadays, if anyone is looking for places to go, Dandelyan, Swift, Three Sheets, Mint Gun Club, London Cocktail Club, Calloh Callay, Cocktail Trading Company, Burlock, The Alchemist and Trailer Happiness are all worthy places to check out0 -
Rum Punch when in the Caribbean and Pina Coladas elsewhere.0

Sat in a posh gaff in the city with a very good friend of mine that had convinced me to go to this particular cocktail bar as he had 'heard good things about the talent'.
After studying the menu for 10 mins prior to my round, he said "just get me one of those blowjobs mate".
Up I went, made my way to the front of the packed bar and shouted at the barman, "Hello mate, can I have a bottle of lager and a blowjob please"
The barman just stared at me blankly, so again - even louder - I said "Can I have a bottle of lager and a blowjob please"
Needless to say, this posh gaff didn't 'do' cocktails with rude names.9 -
Long Island Ice Tea
Electric Lemonade
Multiple Screaming Orgasm
My 3 favourites (in no particular order)0 -
I am a whiskey man so its a Rusty Nail for me. Although I did get into the Dark 'N' Stormy's when we were in Antigua.0

2 parts white rum, 1 part sugar syrup, half a dozen lime wedges muddled in the bottom of the glass, a handful of mint leaves, crushed ice, churn it up and garnish with a mint sprig. All the dilution you need should come from the churning of the cocktailPragueAddick said:

@sam3110 where do you work? I'll have to pop in.sam3110 said:We have threads on beer and spirits, but where do you all stand on cocktails?
I work in a cocktail bar up in London, so have a vested interest in this subject, but has anyone got a favourite cocktail, or a cocktail bar that they go to? And if you are reading this and don't like cocktails, what is it that puts you off?0 -
I love cocktails. I host a cocktail party once or twice a year and everyone seems to have a great time so I guess I'm reasonably good at making them. Either that or they get drunk as quickly as possible and just pretend.
I don't have a favourite that I stick to because I enjoy trying new ones as much as possible, but here's some I like:
Margarita
White or Black Russian
Grasshopper
Brandy or Gin Alexander
Salty Dog
White Lady
Hot Buttered Rum
Gin Martini
Kingston Mule (like a Moscow Mule but with dark rum instead of vodka)
Cuba Libre
Zombie

But I get your point if you just want lots of alcohol; as someone who does not particularly like spirits it suits me just fine - as long as it is made properly, which would be as you describe plus crushed ice, lime juice, and if you are in the right bar here in Portugal considerably more than 5cl of rum. Lovely and refreshing. Takes about ten times as long as pouring a beer, or G n T, hence the price.

I used to frequent a Cuban bar near Rules in Covent Garden and their Mojito's were made with with darker rum, not Lambs dark but more a light brown. Does it have to be white run in a Mojito? I much prefer the darker ones.sam3110 said:

You could certainly use golden rum but dark rum like Lamb wouldn't really suit. That's better in a Cuba Libre. If I'm using white rum, I stick to Havana Club, I steer well clear of those counter-revolutionaries at Bacardi.Riviera said:

I love gold rum in a Mojito, our specs at work call for Bacardi Carta Blanca thoughRiviera said:
