But it's not nothing. He is the vice Captain of England. He is in the middle of a series against Wi and he is out at a nightclub at 2 am. If you want to stay out of trouble don't put yourself in that position.nth london addick said:Why should it stop him why should it ruin his career
He was out having a few beers that clouded his judgement he gave a prick who tried to bottle him a good hiding
His mate tried to stop him but the mist was down
Its a nothing story that just shows how much people get outraged for nothing4 -
I'm home for this mush. You got tickets sorted mate? I'll do the 5 days with ya , if it lasts that bleeding long!Eirik Bakke said:

Piers Morgan reporting on Twitter that Stokes was defending 2 gay men from 2 homophobic abusers.
If so, fair play for sticking up for them; no place for it.
However; why he didn't just keep them away from them rather than go chasing and hitting. That's what people will remember. Dick's comment above is right. In the middle of a series against WI with an Ashes series coming up. Why put yourself there.1 -
Oh, if that's true then they have to keep him on the Ashes tour! And maybe let him captain a Test while they're about it0
-
Precisely. No problem going out for 1or 2 a bevvies but to be out at 2.30 am & get into a drunken fight is not just "thuggish" it is also not professional.dickplumb said:

I remember a few months back watching a TV programme where the police were investigating a death after a bloke threw ONE punch & floored the other person. Unusual & unlucky but just imagine if Stokes had done serious damage - not as if just had a bit of a "push & shove" or threw a punch in self defence - he continuously attacks the bloke.
I reckon he will be dropped from the Ashes Squad & maybe banned for 6-12 months by the ECB. Beefy was banned for smoking cannabis & Gower for flying a plane !!0 -
Gower was never banned!0

Oh by the way, finished with Mitchell averaging 55 and Northeast 51Addick Addict said:
Mitchell averages 51 and Northeast 56. And Mitchell will be 34 by the time the Ashes come round i.e. six years older than Northeast.Leuth said:As I said before, we can all pick our favourites. Why Northeast but not Mitchell, who's had an even better season? Neither will be picked, of course, but only one of them might be in a position to score D1 runs next season. I mean, unless...

(It's kind of incredible that an English opening batsman can hit SEVEN hundreds in a County Championship season and not even figure as part of the conversation, with England's top order a complete shambles)2

It won't be a "nothing story" if he is prosecuted for ABH. And the "mist was down" should not be an excuse for his actions. Oliver Dearlove was killed by one punch all because his assailant was "pissed off". Punching someone was a nothing story as such but the consequences of his actions weren't.nth london addick said:Why should it stop him why should it ruin his career

I'm not for minute suggesting that his actions should end his career. But they might have done. And this isn't his first warning because he's had loads of them. The likes of Cook and Root don't play cricket the way that Stokes does but there are different ways to be effective. Someone like Jimmy Anderson does but the difference is that Jimmy knows his boundaries and where to leave that aggression - on the pitch.1 - Sponsored links:

Stokes is ginger isn't he? Just saying...6

This is a difficult 1 for the ecb. If we were playing anyone else this winter, I think Stokes would be dropped.
However, whilst I don't think England will win this Ashes series anyway, we have no chance of winning the series without Stokes in my opinion0 -
I don't want to come across as a racialist but they really can't help themselves can they? Obviously the short ones are the worst but even a relatively lofty ginger like Stokes is going to blow up like an angry Pitbull at the slightest provocation. I'd like to make it clear that I'm not condoning his actions but I think most people would at least consider his condition to be a mitigating factor.Riviera said:Stokes is ginger isn't he? You lot need to stop worrying about who he is and what he done and look at the provocation he faced
I'd knight him pre ashes for being a normal bloke who don't take shit and deals with the vermin who antagonised him in the right way
Sports people ain't role models they are just blokes good at kicking balls or hitting them with a bit of wood5 -
Ah Piers Morgan - the much sought after source of what is honest and true. All that's missing is where he heard it from - but I wouldn't be surprised if we learn that it was as a result of a text message from Hansie Cronje who had previously hacked into a conversation between Strauss and Bayliss.Big_Bob said:Piers Morgan reporting on Twitter that Stokes was defending 2 gay men from 2 homophobic abusers.

Don't think the sun can carry the can for Stokes being a complete Fuc*wit.Chris_from_Sidcup said:The Sun (once again) are complete and utter arseholes. Firstly they've gone digging for the video footage and found it, then published it, now they're going with "Ben Stokes faces being banned by England after a video emerged of him punching two people in the street". It only emerged after you published it on your website!
Then if/when he gets axed and it causes us to lose, they'll be the first to hammer the team for being shit. Absolute wankers.0 -
No but this should be a police matter, and dealt with by the police. Based on what the police do (charge him or not etc), he should be judged.carly burn said:

Which will make it harder to press charges and have a fair trial, so he'll probably be let off with a caution...Addickforlife said:

he was out drinking at 2:30 am but he wasn't out drinking since noon. They match finished st 8:30? I'm assuming they then had press duties, warm down, team talks, showers etc? Then maybe food. Realistically would he have been drinking much before 11?2

that's right, he cant use the excuse of letting the drink get the better of him.Todds_right_hook said:he was out drinking at 2:30 am but he wasn't out drinking since noon. as above post, he hasnt gone out on an all day bender, video also circulating of him mocking harvey price, which isnt doing him any favours, thats the issue these days im sure we all act like twats but if your famous there will always be someone with a camera hanging around desperate for a few sovs to sell the footage/images.0

According to Cricinfo the presentation took place at 6.15 so, if correct, they could have realistically been drinking from 8.00-8.30.Todds_right_hook said:he was out drinking at 2:30 am but he wasn't out drinking since noon. Also, I repeat there were four others in the group but no other player missed yesterday's match.0 -

Yes - missed the game because he had to give a statement to Police. And was not arrested. And who tried to stop Stokes.MrOneLung said:Apart from Hales

“Jägerbombs!” How many can he get through in one night? “I’ve lost count after 20,” he says, but such nights are the exception now.
Indeed, how many?
The irony is that his mother counsels individuals who have been victims of violence.1 -

How many times have the media outed these acts of complete lunacy!

You lot are hilarious let's see what you or your family would do when facing the same situation what would you do run away and cry
they are allowed to go out and relax have a beer without pricks starting trouble with them the ECB should support his actions6 -
He's an idiot. And, judging solely on the (unconfirmed) video, he looks like a thug.
The Sun have kept up their reputation of being prurient and despicable. And, by doing so, they've invited the possibility of charges being very difficult to make. There should be lots of questions around how they got hold of that tape, and from whom.
Strauss acted in exactly the right way, which is no surprise.
Being arrested and/or investigated should not preclude him from being picked for the Ashes. It might be different if he's charged. But right now, he's innocent and should be allowed to get on with his job: retaining the urn.0 -
Indeed - I don't know why Hales didn't join in and when the bloke was down use his head as a football rather than trying to stop Stokes. In fact, perhaps Hales was the one totally out of control for repeatedly saying "enough, that's enough Stokesy".nth london addick said:You lot are hilarious let's see what you or your family would do when facing the same situation what would you do run away and cry

Of course Stokes should defend himself. But the Law states that he may only do what is reasonably necessary. And he simply was not doing that.2 -
