home repairs, how much do you do yourself?

  • I hate the dirty jobs like running cables, I fitted the cctv to my house then employed someone to get up in the loft to run the cabling.
  • I'll give everything a go once, usually balls it up and get someone else in though. Currently re-doing a whole bathroom, it's been a steep learning curve but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Jesus, a bathroom with a tunnel. Must have been a big job. Well done mate.
The tunnel is for getting rid of the big jobs.
  • Utter useless at pretty much everything. Can't even take out a finance loan agreement without cocking that up (currently on hold and listening to 15 mins of classical music)

I love this. Same here mate, you're not the only one. I've managed to do a few little bits here and there but thats about it. I'm good at painting though. I blame my Dad. He takes over absolutely bloody everything. My wife's friends bought me a drill for my last birthday. Dad even came round to supervise me putting a bloody picture up on the wall. So frustrating...and no, he still doesn't listen. It's got to the point now where I do stuff without telling him otherwise he'd be there 24/7 and confiscate the keys to my tool shed!

What big jobs are we talking about and why are you doing them in the bath?

That is most defiantly a clean job. Digging out to replace a soil stack = dirty job.
  • update: I've had the front panel off and back on again (and it all still works.. phew) in an attempt to reveal the fastenings, no joy. So I looked at the new ceramic top we ordered and the fastenings are at the side. Another look at the oven and the side are covered with panels, possibly insulation. Next will with some assistance, move the oven out to look at the sides, could be fairly straightforward by the looks of it..

  • I am useless at everything, genuinely have no skills or any good at anything - I should just jump off a cliff but knowing me I'd land on a ledge or a bush and survive
  • In my 70's and I still do all the decorating (well emulsion painting anyway). look after the garden and do any small jobs but anything to do with electricity or gas, or specialised D-I-Y like fitting kitchens (although did it once when in my 30's), I leave for the experts. According to my wife, I make a better job than some decorators that she has seen the work of in friends houses
  • Everything within the bounds of my ability.... If i dont know, I know someone who does.

Well with a bit of support from the wife I managed to replace the broken hob glass.. yay! Had to detach and reattach the individual heat rings, but that was easily done as they are spring loaded. One issue was it had been tiled in so the front feet were under the tiles. Unavoidable issue caused by bad install or tiler.

In my latest escapade I shall be attempting to repair an Onkyo TX-SR606 surround sound amp. Decent bit of kit in its day, well out of warranty now though, and not worth getting repaired at the shop. The HDMI card apparently goes wrong on them.. and it requires replacing a few capacitors, with some soldering needed - of which I have very limited experience.

    Wish me luck..

But seriously, it’s good to have a go at fixing yourself. I attempting soldering something similar myself not so long ago - got so fed up with it in the end.
  • need to be careful tho in case we end up on the tight fisted gits thread

  • PCB's are just "Plug n' Play" these days. Google the number of it and price a new one. ;)
  • I do everything that doesn't require a pro... I enjoy it too!
  • Anything but electrics.
Had a few shocks and they hurt, the last one left me with toothache.
Leave electrics to the professional 's.

On the health and safety side of things mate can I suggest you wear a large pair of wellingtons, not only will that save you from electrocuting yourself but they will catch any small bits and pieces before they merge in with carpet and subsequently embed themselves in your feet  .
  • Absolutely fuck all. I'd hire someone to change a lightbulb if I could
  • I'll have a go at most things. Washing machine broke this week, took it apart. Motor needed new brushes, fairly simple job. I think a lot of people would get someone round or throw it out. There are millions if how to fix things vids on YouTube. It's great.
  • Just make sure you have the polarity correct.

How can you tell if you don't?
  • I've been doing a fence all this week, on my fucking own. I'm capable of doing it but my week off, annual leave and I'm broken! It's a long run of fencing too, it's not even my fence, my neighbour bought all the posts and postcrete. He was meant to be doing it with me but for whatever reason has sacked it off. The deal was I bought the boards and he would do it, then I said I'd help him, now I've been doing the whole thing. He's just got in from wherever he's been and asked if I needed a hand, i told him to crack on, I've been at that poxy thing from 8am until 4.30 digging in flint and chalk. This is why I earn good dough doing what I do to pay other people to do this sort of shit
