Whilst what Murphy has said - if true it might mitigate the ill feeling we hold towards him a little - It doesn't damage Curbs in any way. Curbs could be ruthless, in the same way Fergie could. It was part of what made him a great manager.
I'm sorry. I keep trying to read the o.p. but al I can see is "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah "
It just smacks of good pr spin on his part. Counter some bad negativity with it wasn't my fault, my mates felt I was treated harshly and throw in some good deed stuff with helping with the kids. The guy cares about no one but himself. Unfortunately a neutral reading that probably has some sympathy for him.
I remember when we played Fulham in the cup at their place.Murphy was taking the corners, and every time he did so was getting dog's abuse. When he split our defence with a pass from which they scored their first, I thought the inevitable cupping of the ear would follow, but no: nothing. At the end of of the game he walked off to more abuse; again, no reaction, he just looked a bit sad. He acted with more dignity than a lot of our supporters, some of whom were by now fighting with each other. He left over a decade ago, get over it.
I don't remember Curbs mentioning it in his autobiography but I'll look it up with interest. Curbs was certainly capable of playing his cards close to his chest, but I'd warrant his recollection could be quite different to Murphy's.
I know for a fact he didn't appreciate the Murphy's growing interest for attending various luncheons, dinners and charity functions etc and generally ingratiating themselves within the London 'swells set'. Quite understandably, Curbs wanted someone at Sparrows Lane who was 100% focused on football, he felt very strongly that Murphy's main objective in life at that time was to enhance his and his wife's public persona and raise their media profile. Curb's didn't appreciate it one little bit and as is well known, could be a right bastard if you upset him!
I second this about murphy - when I used to listen to talkSPORT breakfast with him and A Brazil, he loved talking about golf courses, who played where, how much that was etc. Oh you've got your house in that part of Surrey, you must be doing alright etc.
It's only annoying because he seems to have no humility or awareness. On the one hand you've got that radio show constantly advertising stuff for people in the trade, yet on the other, you've got a presenter openly talking about his wealth etc
I'm not for one second saying people in the trade are lower earners, far from it, they can make really good money. I'm just saying football is a working class game. Not everybody wants to hear about his lifestyle.

Now that you mention it, I remember that game too. some very nasty comments were made about his wife, who (if I remember correctly) was in the stand on the corner with one of their children. Personally, I thought that went too far, but I'm a bit old fashioned.
Curbs in his last few seasons seemed to fall out with a lot of players!
Murphy, young, kiely, euell
That was the only problem with curbs. He just couldn't handle a star. Not that any of them were especially so, but you could see at various points of their career them developing some sort of an ego. Curbs could never handle that, he loved a matt holland yes boss, of course boss man.
I can't understand why Murphy hasn't taken a full time job as a cleaner in a care home since retirement. It would be a more useful role in society than being a pundit.

Jimmy Seed similarly wasn't a fan of 'stars', or more accurately, players who thought they were stars. He would have thought they were 'too big for their boots'. It wasn't a fame thing. He happily bid for Stanley Matthews, but SM was a humble man. (Admittedly he wasn't at the peak of his fame when he tried to sign him).

Di Canio?
By that time he was still quality but past his prime. He then suddenly fucked off to Lazio when everyone thought he was staying if I recall correctly?

He did sign a contract then Lazio came in for him but had no money, Di Canio is a massive lazio fan and always regretted not making more of his time there (he did start his career there) so he asked the club to release him from the contract and as he had gone about it the right way, the club ripped up his contact and wished him all the best

I always thought he was part of the best midfield we have had since I started going in '76.
