Houston got a problem4

Roland has obviously added the reservoir to his network.
Mowgli is out there now as we speak0 -
Even reservoirs have been Charltonised given they're flooded and not doing their jobs properly.
Thoughts and love to Houston and south/east Texas in general. Harvey has been an absolute nightmare.6 -

Is it just me that sees a certain irony in extreme weather conditions rampaging across the oil capital of Texas, clearly not caused by climate change, which is a fiction. Apparently.1

Obviously can only speak for myself but my "lol" was at the allusion to "Houston, we have a problem" which is what is commonly said by astronauts in films.bazjonster said:

Unto itself, I do not find the fact that Houston is dealing with insane flooding funny.2 -
I'd be very worried if the other 2 were for anyhing else?!SDAddick said:

Pretty grim over there.
Mother Nature at her worst.
And after all that the poor fuckers have The Don arriving tomorrow.1 -
But it should be said that this will hit people regardless of race, creed, political party, or climate change perspective. If this were a hurricane that specifically targeted the Koch brothers, then fair enough. But Houston is a relatively progressive and diverse place with good jobs, good education levels, etc. I don't want to paint all of Texas with a broad brush. And even those who work in the oil industry, for most of them it's just a job, a way to pay their rent. They're not out there like some of the oil barons spending millions of dollars to create junk science saying global warming is a hoax or lobbying against climate change legislation. They're just people.IdleHans said:Is it just me that sees a certain irony in extreme weather conditions rampaging across the oil capital of Texas, clearly not caused by climate change, which is a fiction. Completely agree with you, SD. Those worst affected are unlikely to be oil magnates, it'll be the poorer people in their trailers and wooden houses who get hit hardest and lose what little they have.
My aim was more at Trump, the climate change denier, who I believe is popping down shortly.2 -
If you are so inclined, here are a couple charities you can donate to to help those on the ground helping people caught up in hurricane Harvey.
Team Rubicon: I think this is a really cool charity. I first heard about this in 2013 during Typhoon Haiyan. John Oliver, before he became *the* John Oliver, was talking on his podcast The Bugle about how his wife (a Veteran) had deployed with Team Rubicon to help in the Philippines, and he was freaking out as this was at a time where things on the ground were still insane.
These are Military Veterans who deploy to disaster areas around the world to help people, provide food, shelter, you name it. I think I've talked about it a little, but for a while I worked with the Department of Defense family programs, which meant working with a lot of Veterans as part of a social work effort. Something we heard time and again is that once they returned from deployment or left the Military, they really lacked a sense of purpose. TR must really provide that for these people who are so brave and selfless in what they do.
American Red Cross: You know the Red Cross, they do great work.
All Hands: On the ground disaster relief and recovery support.
Houston Humane Society: Helping to marshal and care for pets and animals in the area.

just shows that for all modern technology, systems control and know how, the weather can cause absolute mayhem and catastrophe ..
IF IF one believes in 'global warming' this is probably just another symptom of more frequent and mega-destructive events to come0 -
What a pity this thread couldn't run for a while without some Trump bashing.IdleHans said:Completely agree with you, SD. Those worst affected are unlikely to be oil magnates, it'll be the poorer people in their trailers and wooden houses who get hit hardest and lose what little they have.

By all accounts the local, state and federal authorities are doing a fantastic job.1

I was reading a comparison with Katrina on the beeb earlier, it seems a lot of lessons have been learnt.limeygent said:By all accounts the local, state and federal authorities are doing a fantastic job.
A good friend of mine is from Houston and his Dad arrived here on Wednesday night, he timed that trip well.1 -

But there is a point that Global Warming has made storms like these much worse.
And there is also the point that Trump wants to cut funding from things like FEMA (disaster response), flood insurance that will help those affected by Harvey, and the National Weather Service who help to predict and track storms like these.
And that's not to mention the fact that a couple weeks ago he reversed the Obama policy that meant that sea level rise and climate change have to be considered when building infrastructure.3 -
Although a thyphoon did start the next day, killing 14 people (not in km, thankfully) and a ton of roads/trains in the local area are down due to the resulting land slides..... Maybe he brought the weather with him.....Stu_of_Kunming said:

Yeah sorry for explaining how things like climate change and budgets impact weather and emergency response.limeygent said:

But if you're upset that we're "off topic" at such a difficult times, then maybe you should talk to the President about staying focused....limeygent said:

Yes, this seems to be the case. But what, just what, induced the Mayor, Sylvester Turner, who normally looks like this:limeygent said:By all accounts the local, state and federal authorities are doing a fantastic job.
to dress like some paramilitary dude when addressing the media!? Can anyone imagine what a laughing stock Sadiq Khan would become if he pitched up at a presser dressed like that?
Worse, it seems he's got a choice of uniform colours1 -

Perhaps it's easier to muck in and help with the relief effort in that gear, rather than a smart suit?cafcfan said:

My neice lives in Houston, about 15 miles from the Addicks Dam.
Her appartment is the Figure 8 shaped block top left of the map, overlooking the triangulare shaped 'field'.
This was the view on Sunday
