Happy Birthday southbound Blackwall Tunnel

Opened 50 years ago. It sometimes feels like I've spent 50 years queuing to get through the Blackwall Tunnel!

    Indeed. Queuing was the first thing that came to my mind too. The vast majority of my visits to Charlton have involved that bloody tunnel.

    When it first opened it was 2 way traffic while the old tunnel was refurbished. If you look at the lettering they allowed for Sir instead or Mr. He never got his knighthood.

    My grandad was the Mayor at the time and was present at the opening stood behind Plummer as he cut the ribbon. I just googled it and got a nice surprise as my grandad can be seen smiling his head off!! (on U tube). I'd kinda forgotten what a happy man he was.

    Ms AA's Dad worked on making that, spent days up to his waist in water. Doesn't sound like a fun job.
