I was 14 when Hybrid Theory came out and I remembering listening to it a lot on CD before moving on. Recently, I threw some songs from that album on my iPod because it really is good music to run to.
He apparently battled depression and addiction for years. Just in case anyone is struggling in a similar fashion, here are a couple of resources (if I get any of this wrong please feel free to correct me):
