  • Best game ever for me. For tension and the late twist, nothing beats it.
  • One of the classics,I remember the day well and going mad when Melrose scored.

I seem to remember even Ralph Milne playing well that day.

Just looked Jim Melrose up on Wiki and his spell with Charlton was by far the most prolific in his career. According to the stats he scored 19 goals in 48 games for the Addicks a much better strike rate than anywhere else he played. Its a shame he left when he did because his career went down hill after leaving us and he was still under 30.

I think we all thought that, but his family were based up north and he was living in digs down south during the week. Footballers weren't paid what they are now so rather than uproot the family he moved back home.

    .

  • I have read recently that on the night of the st andrews replay there was an important football dinner in london (not sure if FA/players/press ) when somebody told them the final score the cheer nearly took the roof off . A fine tribute to our great club.
  • I remembered the noise leeds made that day at sellout, I'd never heard anything so loud and intimidating. w my mate and me were receiving a lot of cut throat gestures from the leeds behind us at the final whistle and then the concrete that they broke off from the stand came raining down on us, one bloke run past me with claret all down his boat. Scary stuff for a 14 year old!
  • T'was 26 years ago today.............
  • Humphrey & Reid, probably my favorite full back pairing.

28 years ago today standing on a wet sainsbury terrace. Late goal from Jimmy Melrose in front of a packed Holmesdale end full of baying Leeds fans.

  • This is the era when I absolutely loved football.
  • I have a vivid memory of Jim Melrose's bullet header. Whilst the atmosphere was intimidating throughout, one had a feeling that, somehow, we'd come through it. That feeling continued, despite losing the second leg at their place, which evened the scores, and saw us face the decider at St Andrew's, where our never-say-die spirit saw us triumph. All together now... "Bolder, Humphrey, Reid...." Happy, happy days.
  • 30 years and counting.
  • Leeds fans were f*****g animals in those days. I remember beating them 4 0 at Selhurst the previous season and they were practically pulling down the gate/fence that divided the Holmsdale end and the Arthur Waite to try and get at us on the way out.
  • I feel as old as Nicholas looks now
  • can remember it like it was yesterday, what a night !!
  • Obviously not as it was an afternoon game!
  • I think Large was referring to the replay at St Andrews.

Completely agree - nasty nasty nasty

For the first leg at Sellout I recall having to go thru metal detectors at the turnstiles for Arthur Wait terraces

Leeds filled the Holmesdale - very menacing

Does anyone remember the lone Charlton fan kicking off in their end, and being escorted across to the Arthur Wait by plod ?

  • Mexican waves across the holmesdale end before kick off........
Leeds fans eyeballing the Charlton in the Arfur something stand instead of watching the game........
    Jubilation at final whistle......
    Yep, happy days.
  • Play-Off final 1st leg. Charlton Athletic 1 (0) (Melrose 87) Leeds United 0 (0) Selhurst Park. Att 16,680 16,679 + me.

They had the back tier of the half a wait stand

Can't remember them being in the Holmesdale, they were behind us in the AW shed, oh well it was 30 years ago

as Golfie said I was referring to the game at St Andrews in error. Was at all three games whether day or night games ;-)
  • 30 years ago. That's scary.

Away fans had that corner on the Holmesdale next to the AW normally - if they brought significant support they got more of it, I'm pretty sure
  • Melrose scored our goal at Sellout at the Holmesdale end - I can see it in my mind

Can't find many photos on the interweb - but this photo shows his goal, and I am pretty sure that those are Leeds fans behind the goal

He did score at the Holmsedale end and whilst I can't be 100% sure, I think the end was split into home and away fans (the hone fans being on the far side)

Yeah I think you are right - they had more than that tiny corner - there were loads of them and they were orrible

Jim Melrose - very underrated player for us IMO - he scored some important goals, and that one was very important indeed - wouldn't have wanted to go to Elland Road nil-nil

Elland Road - 2nd leg - that was intimidating - God I felt outnumbered there !!!
