Australian Open 2017

Anybody managed to watch or listen to any matches? Last year I stayed up late listening to matches on the radio...this year I'm just too fagged out with work to do this.

I see Nadal and Djok have swept their opposition aside to make it to the next round.

Good so far for British tennis. Apparently Murray struggled a bit, but still did it in straight sets...Edmund through in straight sets also.

Konta and Watson both through their first round matches - Konta in 2 sets and Watson hammered Stosur 6 to love in the third - amazing, or was Stosur injured?

Dont forget Dan Evans - He got through on Monday as well.

Bedene was the only one who failed to get through to the 2nd Round out of the Brits so far as I'm aware

Saw a bit of Murray, not his best but did enough.

Edmund has a weapon of a forehand which could take him far in the game.

Naomi Broady playing well against a rather charmless Russian turned Australian. Broady won the first set but down in the 2nd.

Broady loses, despite hitting 19 aces!

Lie in tomorrow as Murray scheduled for a 9.30 am start.

Dan Evans has just won his second set to take a 2-1 lead against 7th seed Cilic

Murray next out on Rod Laver Court

Evans wins in four. Fantastic performance. Murray a set up.

Cant believe that Evans beat Cilic, in 4 sets. A major scalp for him. Great news.
    Murray cruising past Rublev.

Great win for Evans, I can't believe how much he's improved

Murray won easily but rolled his ankle, and was in some discomfort. Hopefully nothing serious

I reckon he has a good chance to progress. Potentially Tomic next although he has just lost the third set but looks very slow around the court.

That Nick Kyrgios is such a dick.

Djokovic down one set against Istomin.

Heather Watson is out. Lost 2-6 7-6 10-8 to Jennifer Brady. As is Kyle Edmund, lost in three sets to the 30th seed.

Djokovic has been broken in the final set... 2-3 to Istomin - Novak potentially losing today wont just benefit Murray for the rest of the Tournament but he'll lose a huge amount of ranking points to Andy as well

Christ... Is 3-4 to Istomin in the final set; overall the game has surpassed the 4.5 hour mark!!

    5-3 Istomin- incredible stuff !

    He's out

WOW!!... this for me is the Tournament that Murray is missing from his trophy cabinet as he always gets so emotional whenever he loses here so will be great if this is the year he can do it.

Yes if he gets to the Quarters he'll face Federer yet the latter has to get there (and win) too

I don't think Federer will get past Nishikori. Tough route to the final but could be a repeat of the Wimbledon final on the cards. Come on Sir Andy Murray!

Such a bonus for Andy. The O2 was special as he had to beat Novak in the final, but Novak has been so dominant here (almost to Rafa in Paris levels) that even at 90% he'd still be favourite

Let's hope his ankle is ok...

Murray shouldn't have much trouble making it to the QF. He has to beat 31 seed Querrey, followed by an unseeded player in the fourth round.

If Murray doesn't win it this year, he probably never will. Won't ever get a better chance.

Fantastic chance for Murray. Whatever is wrong with Novak, niggly injuries, lost desire, or whatever it may be, the fact his poor (certainly by his standards) end to last season has rolled into the first major of 2017 indicates to me that this is more than just a short-term blip.

Murray must force home that advantage in early 2017 - if he can win the first two majors while Djokovic continues to slump, then he will become the holder of a career slam. What an achievement that would be. That would almost certainly secure him top seed status for Wimbledon and the US.

Clay has never been his strongest surface, but he hs improved a lot and with Nadal a fading force too, there are no real standout clay specialists on tour right now. The FDrench is very winnable for him this year, I think.

Wimbledon he should be relaxed now after 2 wins there and he is strong on grass and loves the partisan support he gets there.

There is sterner competition for him at the two hard courts majors from the likes of Wawrinka and Del Po, not to mention of course Djokovic if he can regain his mojo as the season goes on, but an actual calendar grand slam is far from a pipe dream for him this. He has a decent record at the US, after all, and knows how to win there.

How sweet that would be for him to achieve, and where would that rank him in the pantheon of all-time tennis greats?

The post melonium era has been kind to Murray. It's a bit premature to talk about a calander grand slam though.

Far too early for talk about Murray doing a slam this year. He might not even win his next match!

It's a long season and lots can happen, changes of form, injury etc., but with Djokovic out of sorts, Murray seemingly in the form of his life, and the next generation still to really start coming to the fore, there is a definite opportunity for him to do something really special this year.

The odds are very much against it happening, but at the same time the competition this year may not be quite as stiff as it has been in previous years.

Besides, not much point me bringing it up after he wins Wimbledon to make it 3 from 3. I wouldn't sound very smart suggesting he might do a grand slam at that point, now would I?

I hate him but watching today I think Nadal is getting back to his best. Murray has given himself a large rest period after the Australian but think mentally he could be struggling in later rounds. Playing Nishikori Stan and raonic or Nadal will be tough and Querrey is no pushover tomorrow morning either.
  • Options
A Nadal - Murray final could happen. Haven't seen that for a while.
  • Options
If nothing else, Murray is going to have a decent period at No 1 now. Novak was so dominant in the 1st half of 2016 that he has masses of points to lose, while nobody else is near catching him
