I fully support your taking that stance. I have a pretty similar outlook. The only times I haven't been disinterested in what happened to one of our players after they left was with Hales, because I like him so much and wanted to see him succeed, and Defoe and Parker, because I wanted to see them fail miserably.SoundAsa£ said:Looks like I'm the only one who doesn't really give a toss....I've been going to The Valley for 60 years and the only way I personally have been able to live with all the departures of our star players is to try as best I can to ignore them once they've gone. For me, the alternative simply makes their loss all the more gutting.
I don't give a toss about Everton or "any" of their players!
We're all different I guess........l've had an f'ing gut full over the years and it doesn't get any easier.
I suspect from the posts so far, that I'm probably on my own with this view.....I'll just have to live with it.
I also hope he does well because it enhances the reputation of our club.
And finally I hope he does well because he's a nice kid.
Enhances the reputation of our club..............er well yes Ben, but more as a selling club to be honest.
I also wish him well (I've no reason to do otherwise), but that's about it I'm afraid.......for whatever reasons he's flown the nest.....so, it's on to the next one.....and the next one and the next one.
I'm sick and bloody tired of it!

It's great, and I'm happy for him, but what the f*ck is Otamendi doing?1
-
Christ knows... I know he's making mistakes but for Alan Shearer to keep singling out Stones on MOTD2 last night was a joke - the most basic thing you can do as a Defender is track the runner, Otamendi almost starts running AWAY from Lookman before realising whats going on, how the hell can he be immune to any criticsm when he's played for Porto / Valencia / Argentina etc.JollyRobin said:It's great, and I'm happy for him, but what the f*ck is Otamendi doing?

City's defence as a whole is atrocious. They look so shaky when they come up against any good side. Stone's, unfortunately for him, is taking the brunt of it because he's English and because the press spent two years heralding him as the next John Terry.ForeverAddickted said:

I think he could do with a spell out of the side to get his head in the right place.2 -
Agreed... I really like Stones because for me, he's like Joe Gomez (just not as good) yet the English way is to get the ball away from the danger areas by hoofing it up field, usually that results in the ball coming straight back with the pressure not being lifted.JollyRobin said:

The Defence is simply the first part of attack and if we can get the likes of Stones / Gomez to tackle and then pass coolly forwards (or bring it forwards safely themselves) then the pressure is gone and we're creating our own chances.0 -
Stones still has a tonne of potential, but time is running out to learn how to defend properly. It's not his fault that he got sold for the best part of £50m whilst he's clearly still developing as a player - but there's an expectation there to play like a £50m centre-back.ForeverAddickted said:

Martinez ruined him because he's not a Defensive Coach whereas under Koeman he'd have surely got his form back0 -
I can't remember exactly but wasn't there something about him signing a deal/somehow ensuring we got more money out of the deal instead of going to a tribunal?Kap10 said:

I would hazard a guess that the attitude of kids progressing through our Academy is changing from dreaming about playing for Charlton's first team, to getting in our first team to get a move to a Championship or Premier League club. Only a guess, anyone with inside knowledge is free to correct me.0

Really pleased for him, always makes me feel good to see our ex youth doing well when they left on good terms. Gomez, Shevley, Jenkinson etc.
Poyet... oh no wait HAHAHA JUDAS
First touch was a bit loose tho!0 -

And I really don't want the this mob, who have ruined the reputation of our club, have the reflected glory of other peoples hard work.
I really like to see the young man do well and I'm sure he's on the right path but give it another 6 games and most people in the game will have forgotten where he came from and the oh-so few amount of games we got to watch him. Next season Everton supporters will probably be calling Lookman a product of their system.
I'm gutted that we lose another promising young player and replace him with what amounts to half of nothing.2 -
It's because they see us as a path to the top, that they sign for us in the first placeandynelson said:I would hazard a guess that the attitude of kids progressing through our Academy is changing from dreaming about playing for Charlton's first team, to getting in our first team to get a move to a Championship or Premier League club. And why we will never see success under Roland as it would interfere with his cunning plan.andynelson said:

That bit really isn't Roland's fault. Even if we were in the Championship it'd happen.2
-
And if you think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Premiership...I don't know what to say to you.0
-
But it's THEIR plan though, i.e. the plan of the players. The players all have agents from a young age, telling them not to get stuck at smaller clubs, and get a big money move to the PL. Then you get greedy parents who also want money today, not in the futureandynelson said:

He could have given Chris Powell a quarter of the money he has wasted and we would have had a damn good stab at it.Leuth said:And if you think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Premiership...I don't know what to say to you.

Regardless of what we hear and read in the media, once vast increases of salary are mentioned a player will almost certainly move.Algarveaddick said:
Not on your own SoundAs, but with qualified agreement. I am delighted for a young man who, from all accounts, loved our club. He was happy to stay following the relegation to the third tier that our ludicrous SMT allowed to happen. He may well have stayed longer, had they not outed the manager they appointed to "improve our position" in the summer. But at that point any sane person (he has three A Levels) would have thought "I'm out". My opinion is, that, had he had any inclination whatsoever of any ambition from the club's ownership that he may be playing in the top flight within a few years wearing a Charlton shirt, he just might have stayed?SoundAsa£ said:Looks like I'm the only one who doesn't really give a toss....I've been going to The Valley for 60 years and the only way I personally have been able to live with all the departures of our star players is to try as best I can to ignore them once they've gone. I think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Championship, and won't be next season at least. And if we're gradually turning towards the Crewe model we won't be there for a long time. After Aribo and Konsa go the cupboard is bare.Leuth said:And if you think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Premiership...I don't know what to say to you.

Not from RDs point of view. Since we were relegated from the Prem we've pretty much always had youth players break through. Why would that change next season? Even easier in League One.andynelson said:Leuth said:And if you think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Premiership...I don't know what to say to you.

Roland has benefitted from having Gomez, in the opinion of myself and many others the best defender Charlton have ever produced, Lookman, the best forward since Robert Lee, he's got £1m (reportedly) for Fox, and we all know the list of other young players he's sold. These things come in phases, and the last 2/3 years has been a very good phase, has there ever been a more productive time? All credit to Steve Avory, our unsung hero, but he can't be expected to unearth this level of talent every year.Leuth said:And if you think it's Roland's fault we're not in the Premiership...I don't know what to say to you.
