My train set from the mid-sixties is in an old wooden flower crate buried under a pile of other junk in the shed along with such other stuff from my youth like a ton of old football programmes and the first 100 plus issues of GOAL magazine (first one in 1968 had George Best on the cover, no doubt to make sure it sold a lot of copies) and about the first 20 or so issues of SHOOT. No doubt the lot will get junked one day when I'm not around to say 'they must be worth something'
One of the things I have learnt out here is that only the British think this hobby is weird. Maybe the Czechs, like the Germans are more technically minded, but nobody thinks it's weird, its just another hobby like hunting or mushroom picking. It's really quite odd when you realise that and then reflect that we invented the railways. I wonder where this attitude came from.

Aren't most hobbies that don't involve going to the pub or socialising or drinking considered "weird".

Used to have an attic bedroom and the whole room had a track around it. Liked the little steam loco's personally. I'd place a small engine ahead of about 20 coaches and trucks and watch it try to move. Real sick shit it was ;-)
As for train spotting, embarrassed to say, I can recall many a day spent as a 10-11 year old, travelling the country with a class mate, on our own, to see marshaling yards at Doncaster, Crew, Manchester etc. Parents these days seem too quick to nanny their kids and fill them with fear that the world is dangerous. Either that or they don't want it getting around that their kids are train spotting. Probably feel more comfortable handing them a bag of glue. (Now there's a misspent 70's afternoon)
In the good old days, you could get through a hole in a fence and walk round Old Oak Common sheds without any problem. Saw the Advanced Passenger Train in there before it came out.

So impressive. I remember when the set-up and Colchester Zoo used to claim to be the world's biggest, but that wasn't a patch.
It's an amazing place. The mass of trains provide the backdrop whilst the scenes are the story. It's brilliant and very funny/clever. They've got a working model airport too!
How old are you, Stig? I think I had that set. I got it for Christmas, but I hadn't asked for it, so presumably my dad wanted one. My step dad has got the full model village going on in his loft.

I did think of buying one of my grandkids a model train set, but they all appear too attached to their electronic games and other similar distractions. The term 'model railways' is evocative of a childhood, when on our weekly visits to Bexleyheath Broadway there were two attractions - watching the trolleybuses on routes 696 and 698 and peering into Jennings window. Now that was a toy and model shop. Only to be outdone by the annual pilgrimage to Gamages in Holborn. They had a great layout. And then there were the TWO national model railway exhibitions in London. One was held in the Central Hall, Westminster. About a bob (5p) to get in. In the mid 1950s my weekend was complete with the Addicks winning at home and a copy of the Railway Modeller being put through our letter box. If only life was that simple nowadays!

In the summer my friend organised a Fire of London pub crawl. On the pre-tour that we did to sort out the pub list for the pre-tour, we ended up at Blackfriars (as we usually do on these occasions). When we arrived, this was outside.
