Murphy a bit confused?

Watching Spurs v Villa. Murphy commented on what a gentleman Daniel Levy was..they had spoken when Murphy was leaving Crewe for Liverpool ("Spurs were in for me too"). But, Murphy left Crewe in 1997, Levy as far as I can see joined the board of Spurs in 2000. Surely our Danny can't be confused by conversations that would have been 9 years apart?
