Indeed - but this is specifically relating to a Kent player and therefore more appealing to Kent supporters in my humble opinion. Posting it on the BB thread might cause a "so what" reaction whereas I know that Kent supporters are far more tolerant and discerning - apart from you, of course!

Given that the Sixers won off the final ball of the match, I think it's fair to say that they wouldn't have done so but for Joe's innings. This was also not only his debut but the Sixers first win this season having lost the previous six matches. Perhaps that's why they are called the Sixers!

Thanks for this Len. Brought a little tear to my eyes seeing that side - I was the same age for that final as Seb is now. It's a shame that he doesn't have the same connection with the current Kent team as I did with that one but that's no different, I suppose, to football either nowadays - times have changed and sportsmen are far more transient and mercenary. As he will probably have to be if he is ever lucky enough to make a living from the game.

On the correspondents theme, there were other Kent players of that era who would not have stood a chance today on the basis of their physique , namely David Nicholls and Alan Ealham. Ironically Ealham was often chosen by England as their substitute fielder once the official 12th man had been released!

A good number of credible judges rated Alan Ealham at his best a better fielder than Derek 'Arkle' Randall.
I loved Alan Ealham as an outfielder, the way he patrolled the boundary at St Lawrence was a joy to watch. The safest of hands and a throw straight into Knotty's gloves every time. Randall was something completely different, an in-fielder who swooped on the ball with such anticipation it was amazing. When we had him and Graham Barlow on either side of the wicket for England, as we did for a few games in the late 70"s, it was really exciting. I don't think you can compare Ealham and Randall and never have heard anyone do so before. It would be like comparing a full back with a centre forward. Taking nothing away from Ealham, as I've said I was a big fan, in the days when he was used as a sub fielder for England you could only field in the outfield as a sub.
Sam billings named captain and northeast is off. No idea what on earth is happening at Kent at the moment but I'm extremely worried about where the club is heading. No decent bowlers and our best batsmen has left.
What's the actual point of this West Indies tour if we have no new players ?? Really hope we have some signings coming in.

Not really. Billings has obviously got into the England setup, but mainly in T20. T20 in England isn't done on a divisional basis, rather by region, so Billings still faces the likes of Surrey, Hampshire etc.
Northeast by contrast has ambitions to play for the England test side, where clearly it is harder for a top order batsman playing in Div 2 to get a look in than it is for a Div 1 player.
As a Kent fan I'm gutted Northeast is leaving, but as a fan of the player, he deserves an opportunity to give it one last shot for England and I wish him all the best in that.
From a young age he was touted as the next big thing, and so at 28 now he needs to get some runs for a Div 1 county so have any chance of fulfilling that dream. I imagine had Kent got promoted last year, he would be staying and aiming to score runs with Kent, but that hasn't happened and so best of luck to him.
I do not think that two divisions are advantageous to the England setup. Players need to be facing the best bowlers and batsmen and you will not find many of those in Div2, hence the likely departure of Northeast. Has the existing setup really made County Cricket more competative and interesting. Not really in my opinion.

Agreed. If the selectors are loathe to pick people from Div 2 (which, apart from a few exceptions it appears they are), then it effectively gives England just 8 counties to pick their players from.

Absolutely - there are only so many spots for players to play in Division 1 - especially if they are a specialist such as a wicket keeper or spinner. We've seen how the likes of Buttler have had to move counties but what if the other seven Div 1 counties are happy with their keeper or spinner? By definition they have to play in Div 2.
