Nico Rosberg: World champion retires from Formula 1

Hamilton expected to speak to press later today according to Sky Sports.
Something just doesn't add up. I don't think Rosberg would have had anything to do with any dodgyness but even he would question 7pr 8 engine issues for Lewis and none for him. It is just so crazy in its inbalance.
He probably thought he will never get that luck again and better off out of it. Especially if he feared something coming out from Merc.0 -
What do you expect? Lewis is British and successful - that inevitably means he's got to be damned in whatever he does.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
What do you want him to say? if he says nothing, he's a sore loser and criticised for not congratulating him. He congratulates him and he's criticised because he supposedly doesn't mean it.sam3110 said:
Took him 3 days and what he puts on Twitter doesn't correspond to how he really feelsWSS said:bbob said:
good to see Lewis taking the defeat like a manDamoNorthStand said:Said on the other thread:
Rumours at coming to me from Sky Sports F1 contacts (I work in the media and sports industry )that something BIG has happened at Mercedes in relation to the unrest with Hamilton and his blown engines. Lewis threatened to bring in legal support versus the team and Rosberg.
And Rosberg bows out.
Think something dodgy has gone on here2 -
It's unusual to retire immediately after success, but a couple of female tennis players have done the same thing after winning their first grand slam event, e.g. Bartoli after Wimbledon and Pennetta after the US.0

Behave! If Lewis has evidence his engines were tampered with to give Rosberg some sort of advantage he has every right to take it somewhere.bbob said:

With Rosberg going, I'm sure Mercedes will quietly drop any action against Hamilton over his tactics in the last race!5

Can we crown Hamilton 2017 Champion now? Let's face it, it's going to be between him and his team mate because no one else can win it. And we will be back to Hamilton no. 1 driver whatever the authorities stipulate about "team orders".

Not with the new regulations it isn't, it's more likely to be a cakewalk for the Red BullsAddick Addict said:Can we crown Hamilton 2017 Champion now? Well the new rules favour engines with more power, and Mercedes have the most powerful engine currently. So you'd think they'd maintain their position at the top. However, Adrian Newey always seems to adjust to new regs the fastest, which combined with Renault supposedly being on the verge of a major power breakthrough, so could be advantage Red Bull.
At least it should be a more interesting year next year. New regs, faster, noisier cars and hopefully closer competition.0 -
Renault have a lot of "tokens" to use on the engines, and lets face it Red Bull were easily the second fastest team at the end despite having one of the worst enginesrandy andy said:Well the new rules favour engines with more power, and Mercedes have the most powerful engine currently. New regs are also going to favour aero dynamic efficiency - Red Bull dominated heavily last time it was that kind of formula and still have Adrian Newey who is the grand master of aerodynamic engineering. This season's Renault engine (sorry Tag Heuer engine) made up quite a lot of ground on Mercedes between 2015 and 2016 and Renault have been throwing a lot of money at F1 now they have a works team again.randy andy said:Well the new rules favour engines with more power, and Mercedes have the most powerful engine currently. Red Bull arguably have two of the four best drivers on the grid too.
Hopefully it won't be a cake walk for anyone though - we need some inter-team competitiveness back in the sport. If someone like Alonso could get Rosberg's seat that would also help as the two best teams on the grid will have two quite evenly matched driver pairings.0 - Sponsored links:

Don't get why people are calling him a bottle job and a cop out. He clearly explained why in his announcement as to why. He's achieved his dream, it's a long hard season that takes his toll, and he wants to spend time with his family. I can't see any problems with going out at the top.7
-
Casey Stoner quit MotoGP at the top so he could see his family more, avoid injuries and get out the spotlight. Despite being a double world champ he's been a happier person since; not everyone wants to race until they're too old or hurt.2

If I was Mercedes I would see If I could get Button. Ex world champion, excellent development support, Mates with Hamilton, good enough to come second in a decent car and win when Hamilton breaks down. Would be grateful for odd victories here and there. Has links with the team - it used to be Braun! Team may need to focus on one driver next season if things are tighter - not have two picking points off each other. Would only be for a season which gives time to appraise situation. I wouldn't be surprised if Hamilton suggested it to the team!
I think Button has a weird contract still with McLaren, but as a cold business decision it would make a lot of sense for Mercedes although they may want a German driver and Hulkenberg may fit the bill. Verstappen will be under a handcuff contract with Red Bull I would imagine. Vettel may be in the running the season after next if he gets fed up with Ferrari.0 -

Don't see why not as the team is to all intents and purposes a British team - designed, built and tested in Brackley!!SoundAsa£ said:

It would give Verstappen and Vettel a year to find a way out of their teams too.0

I think Button is mentally ready to call it a day.MuttleyCAFC said:If I was Mercedes I would see If I could get Button. This. I did like the thought of Button coming back as out of all the team mates Lewis has had (with the exception of Heikki) they did seem to get on well.killerandflash said:

But can't see him being motivated to take the challenge on.
Alonso will be repeat dialling Toto Wolff as we speak.
Vettel seems to have fallen out of love with Ferrari and their management very quickly. Think he would be keen as would Merc (if you think they would be behind Nico for a German WC it would be another level with Vettel.... He is actually German for starters). But Vettel vetoed Lewis at Red Bull and probably knows he would be outpaced.
Guessing Bottas is a good shout. Already managed by Wolff and whilst good enough to get the points needed for the constructors, would be unlikely to bother Lewis too much leading to a more harmonious team atmosphere.
Wehrlein isn't ready IMO. Looked ordinary versus Ocon this year.

Aside from the links to the media I have which are well known on this board..... The inequality in engine issues is fact. Whether or not you believe there being something going on behind the scenes can be debated back and forth.cafcdave123 said:

Wouldn't surprise me if Lewis follows him out the door if he isn't comfortable with Toto Wolff...
What is it you love about Nico and HATE about Hamilton?0 -
Incidentally was supposed to go to a Q and A with the sky sports team and Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe on Weds in London.... Been cancelled. Apparently Wolff has 'other engagements'.0

If I had my engines messed with I wouldn't race another race with the team that sabotaged me. Yet no talk of Hamilton leaving...0 -

i said he came across as a bellend in an interview and that i wanted nico to with the championship but apart from that you are just assuming i hate him because i, unlike yourself, am not desperate to gobble him off at every opportunity.
Hamilton believes he deserved to win the title so im pretty sure if he had anything that would have nico stripped and him named champion we wouldn't even be having this discussion0 -
Other engagements like finding a driver for his team other than talking to some hacks?DamoNorthStand said:Incidentally was supposed to go to a Q and A with the sky sports team and Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe on Weds in London.... Been cancelled. Apparently Wolff has 'other engagements'.
