  • He had a lot more hair when he played for us...

Didn't Lennie say of him, after we were promoted to the old Div One, something like - he had the potential to score twenty plus a season but also could easily fail to get into double figures? Unfortunately for us, it was the latter.
  • What Lennie said was that Mark Stuart was the sort of bloke who could end up playing for Barcelona or Bromley, depending on how he applied himself.
Ended up leaving us for Plymouth and then onto Rochdale where he spent quite a few years, if I remember correctly.
I was a big fan of his but I think Lennie thought he was too lightweight.
  • Well done Ormiston, your memory is flawless, unlike mine....:-)

Yeah thats absolutely right, Barcelona or Bromley.
  • Yeah, it was a classic Lennie quote, he had a terrific sense of humour even in our darkest days.

His best one was explaining how Kenny Achampong had missed an open goal, albeit from quite an acute angle in a Division One match at Selhurst, "Because the sort of players you get on a free from Fulham can't score from there!"

Things have never been the same since he left on the great quote front, Curbs was a dour machine and Dowie a Brent-like manager although Pards is showing some promising signs of having a great sense of humour.

Mark Stuart was intensely frustrating to watch. He could happily beat 4 players, and then run straight into the 5th one and lose the ball. But he'll still be a legend for scoring the winner at Old Trafford that led to Big Ron getting the sack.

Oh, and I think I'd still take him over Dennis Rommedahl.

Jesus, how true is that. Remember the cup game against Walsall at Sellout? We scored after about five minutes and I remember thinking it would be a rout. Then that fucking no mark Kelly scored twice for them, Stuart kept beating his man about four times in the same dribble then ran straight into their centre halves. Sheeesh he was up there with Rommedahl , Whyte and Newts on the frustration meter.

All true, but he was a pretty regular goal scorer, the books show he got 31 in 106 games which is good for a winger. He even got 15 goals in 60 Division One games for us which is really pretty good and suggests he was very unlucky to be released.

He was frustrating when he tried to beat one too many but as you correctly point out the books don't lie and we should have kept him in my opinion.

The rumour I heard was that he was allegedly released because he fell out with Flanagan who was assistant manager at the time.
