A sad Christmas story

With Christmas coming, can I relate a sad story and one typical not only of the club at present but also of the previous regime.

Some of you may remember that a decade ago I published a book on the club’s pre-First World War history based on cartoons of the period and called The Addicks Cartoons. It sold well and I covered my costs in just a few months. And then it settled down into a steady sale.

But then commercialisation set in at the club shop and the store was contracted off to an outside firm with no connections to Charlton. No one at the club shop itself apparently had the power to stock The Addicks Cartoons and all I was given for contact with the outside firm was a mobile number. No one ever replied at the number and there was no answering facility. So I was left with just over 500 copies of the book on my hands.

I am now told that a new outside organisation will take over the club shop next season but after my experience under two regimes at the club, I am hardly very confident. Hence this note.

For those of you who don’t know about the book. I suggest it might make a useful Christmas present – it even includes a cartoon of the Charlton derby of Christmas Day 1909 between Charlton Athletic and Charlton Albion.

The price is £11.95 including postage. You can order on landline 020 8777 5656 or email me on newsbrok@globalnet.co.uk The Museum also has copies and all income from those copies go to the museum. It is also possible to order framed copies of individual cartoons.

  • It is an excellent book and well worth the money if you are interested in Charlton pre-world war 1 - which you bloody well should be!

Great! Have you got a website where I can look at some examples? Potential Christmas present, and havent seen your previous books, so just an idea of the sort of thing it is would be nice :)

Except the people in the pictures in the book aren't all complete and utter tossers.
