    My Grandad, born and raised in Deptford, told me stories about going to Herne Hill to watch the cycle races .. no TV, live sports were all the rage at the turn of the 20th Century, a cheap day out

    Funny you mention Herne Hill, I was browsing the London Irish rugby clubs shop earlier on and there was a cracking t-shirt commemorating their first match, against Hammersmith, which was held there.

    I ended up doing a bit of reading and found that it was also the home of the London Welsh for 40 years, and hosted the amateur FA Cup final one year - featuring Bromley.

    It's really fascinating to learn about the history of the places you see everyday!.
