Cash for points not league placing?

edited May 2007 in General Charlton
Do you think it may make a bit of difference if the Premier league paid out on points gained and not your final position?

eg Man Utd had nothing to play for, and OK maybe another £1.5 - 2m is no big deal to them surely it would make some difference? It would also make a mid table game have a bit of spice, even if one team couldn't move up the league or were already relegated they would have something more than pride to play for.

Not sure how much it would work out per point either, what are Man Utds looking at for being Champions. Any pitfalls in this logic? (apart from the min/max points given out in one season being variable)

  • good suggestion that is
  • Agree - it must of peeved the chelsea and manure fans having forked out at least a bulls eye for there recent match to only see their reserve match kick about.
  • It wouldn't work - just look at how we always finished under Curbs - total crap in the last 10 games even though there was a couple of million to play for. Even in the last game we usually could finish in a range of about 4 or 5 positions (ie. couple of million) and still would lose.
  • i couldn't see it making much difference but its an interesting concept.

Would it encourage clubs to go for the 3 points more ?
  • If you want competition in the league then make the last CL spot a play-off between the teams finishing 4th-7th. In fact can't see why this hasn't been floated before because 16 teams are going to love it and the big four would have no choice under PL rules.
