  • Cory Gibbs lurking in there perhaps? Can't rule him out, I don't know what he looks like.
  • I think that the player in the dark shirt standing behind the gaffer is Dai Astley.

I think that the player in the dark shirt standing behind the gaffer is Dai Astley.

Good spot. also dates the picture to 1928 to 1931

    That was pretty easy

No one was called Kieth, Steve or Paul in the old days.

Those are 60s and 70s names

Then, like now, men were called George, Fred, Bert, Harry, Joe or Badon
Back Row: Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble & Grubb

Think back row, 4th from the right is Wilson Lennox. Will check when I get home this evening.

I also thought that might be Mr Lennox. I always remembered what he looked like cos he had really sticky-out ears! Mid you, a few of them in the pic do so we could be wrong!
  • I think the player sat on the 'floor' on Norman Smith's side (our left) is Jack Horton.
  • Back row second from the left - Jack Pugsley.
  • Dark shirt behind Norman Smith - Fred Whitlow
  • Player in dark shirt sat next to the manager - Albert Langford

  • Henry was right about the names.
  • Front row second from the right (dark shirt) is John Rankin (I've just seen the other photo and he's sat in the same place..).

I think that's John Pitcairn sat next to him on the end, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. If it is him it helps date the picture as I don't think he joined until 1930(?).
  • When you get time @Paddy Powell can you collate all your answers onto on post? Thanks
  • All from the left

    Back Row: (2nd) Jack Pugsley
Middle Row: (4th) Fred Whitlow; (6th) Dai Astley
Front Row: (3rd) Norman Smith; (6th) Albert Langford; (8th) John Rankin; (9th) John Pitcairn (?)
Sitting in Front : (left) Jack Horton
  • 2nd row, 3rd from the Left is Spongfoot Spencer
  • Back row, fourth from the right is definitely Wilson Lennox. Got another picture of him here, playing against Man City, that might be of interest.
  • Wilson third from left here. Not sure who any of the others are.
  • This one's not in the best condition. Newspaper picture of Wilson scoring against Cardiff, I presume with the East Teraace looking on.
  • Front row, sitting on the end on the left. Looks like the bird one of my mates pulled last night.
  • So guess where we found this picture?

It looks like the same photo other than the two insets and the background changed but we now have the names.

It was in the Museum storeroom

Thanks to @jamesking93 and @charltonnick for finding it

We're still no nearer to finding out the away shirt colours. Away programmes don't say, give it as red and while even when playing another team that plays in red or in one case blue shirts and white shorts

  • Great pics @MrLargo are they yours and if so where did they come from?
  • Thought thread title was going to be about our current squad.

I can name a few of em. Not completely useless.

Wilson Lennox's daughter is my mum's cousin. She doesn't know her that well but there's about twenty cousins that meet up for lunch once or twice a year. My mum told her her sons are Charlton supportersso she sent us the pictures with a Christmas card.

Happy to scan them for you if you want them for the museum.

If there is anything else in the family we'd love to have scans or photos of them too.
  • No problem. On holiday at the moment, will sort out as soon as I'm back.

I'll get my mum to find out if she's got anything else.
