Phillips: 8 - Excellent game, really confident in his handling and other than the occasional misplaced kick didn't put a foot wrong. Definitely happy for him to be our No.2 this season. Konsa: 7 - Had a very solid game and looked the class player of the youngsters. Fox: 6 - Didn't do a lot wrong. Just cruised through the game really. A couple of nice overlapping runs. Lennon: 7.5 - Thought he had a fine game considering how lacking in match sharpness he must be. Really good to see him back. Johnson: 6.5 - He was a bit slow and ponderous at times, but to be fair won some good headers at both ends of the pitch. Still be happy to never see him in a Charlton shirt again though. Foley: 5 - Slow, one dimensional and the energy of the talented Southampton youngsters exposed him. Would far rather have seen Charles-Cook given a game, but the tournament rules prevented it. Solly: 6 - He isn't a central midfielder. He always does ok there because he is a good player. But no more than that. Crofts: 5.5 - Better than Foley, but same issues. At least has a bit of creativity about him. Ahearne Grant: 6 - He isn't a left winger, he was totally lost in the first half. In the second half though he looked pacy and talented, but short in match practice. I really believe he will come good. Be good to get him out to the conference on loan for the season. Ajose: 4.5 - If I am being honest he looked like Slade had told him not to really bother. Hanlan: 6.5 - Excellent first half and patches in the second. I look forward to seeing more of him. Umerah: 6 - Made an impact when he came on. -.5 for not looking up when Hanlan had a tap in though. Chicksen: 6 - Seemed to fit straight in and play in a similar way to Fox really.
The first half was terrible, however I think that the team picked it up in the second and gave it a really good go.
Phillips: 6 some very good saves, his distribution let him down. Konsa: 6 didn't offer much offensively, solid defensively. Fox: 6 Lennon: 6 likes to play out from the back with the ball Johnson: 6 Foley: 6 Solly: 6 Crofts: 6 Ahearne Grant: 6 grafted well, hopefully he can rebuild his career under Slade Ajose: 5 Hanlan: 6 worked hard, and won every ball in the air, good target man play. Umerah: 5 lucky not to get a red. Chicksen: 6 good little cameo.
Phillips: 8 - very good display, made several good saves Konsa 7 - looked very assured. still think he's best at CB Fox: 6 - did a job Lennon: 7 - looked good considering how long he's been out. glad to have him back Johnson: 5.5 - got skinned a few times and made some mistakes. assured in the air at least Foley: 5 - made the odd good tackle but on the whole a very average player when in midfield Solly: 6.5 - good use of the ball and strong in the tackle Crofts: 6 - solid presence and rarely gives the ball away, needs someone with creative flair alongside him however Ahearne Grant: 6 - fairly anonymous first half, but looked quite threatening at times during the second Ajose: 4 - was a poor display, failed influence the game apart from one decent through ball. almost looked disinterested at times Hanlan 7 - looked extremely promising, very strong and a good turn of pace. faded a little in the second but a great performance Umerah: 6 - looks like he could have potential but showed his inexperience at times making some mistakes. not ready yet Chicksen: 6.5 - played fairly well apart from a poor free kick at the end, could have potential Charles-Cook: n/a - looks very rusty
Really hard to judge as this was a completely nothing game against a development squad.
Phillips: 8 has a point to prove and proves it. Some really good saves. Distribution a bit off Konsa: 7 looked assured Fox: 7 aa above Lennon: 7 good to se him back. Also has a point to prove. Tried to get the ball moving forward. Johnson: 7 played well... Still hate him. Foley: 4.5 I think I can count on one hand the amount of times he passed the ball forward. Very Semedo-esque. Disappointed that our midfield didn't bully their kids. Solly: 6.5 assured as you'd expect Crofts: 6 as Solly, although he should've bullied their kids more. Ahearne Grant: 6 decent, but his decision making lets him down. He needs to know when to pass and when to shoot. Ajose: 4 very little service but really didn't look too bothered (can you blame him?). It's not a harsh make - he probably feels insulted about playing in the same competition as an academy. Hanlan: 6.5 strong, quick and passes the CL height test. Controlled the ball well and caused them problems. Umerah: 6.5 (-.5 for not squaring it to Hanlan). Really promising and we looked better when he came on. He battled with their defenders and wound them up. Chicksen: 6.5 slotted in well.
Charles-Cook n/a good to see him back. Would've rather seen Muldoon come on as I feel he's the better player.
Charles- Cook is head and shoulders above Muldoon and would do a good job in the centre of our midfield when fully fit. He runs with the ball can pass and has got a great engine. I thought Muldoon would make it when I saw him as a sixteen year old but I think he will drop to League two or possibly out of the league.
Phillips: 9 - MOTM. Really struggling with some of the low marks given him. Three top saves during the game, and saved one in the shootout. I really get fed up with the comments about any keeper's distribution. Would Dean Kiely have got a 4 every match? Konsa: 7 - The match up of the night. Ezri tackled, bullied, and mugged Southampton's no. 51 so much, after the final whistle he was still looking scared that our big no. 15 was going to turn up on he coach going home... Fox: 6.5 - Solid, overlapping a few times, and looking untroubled all night. Lennon: 7 - Good to see him back. Again, untroubled all game. Looked dead on his feet after 90 minutes, but it will do him good. Johnson: 6.5 A few mistakes, but dominant in the air, and marshalled the young defenders well. Foley: 5.5 Anonymous first half, but played further forward in the second, to hassle and mark the Southampton midfielder who dropped back to pick the ball up from defense. This was a major contributer to our improved performance. Solly: 6 - OK. No more, no less. Crofts: 6 - Strong in the tackle, and tried to get forward more in the second half. Ahearne Grant: 6 - Did very little in the first half, but caused problems with his direct running in the second. Ajose: 5 -Totally anonymous, and his body language was poor. His head dropped every time something went wrong. Hanlan: 7 - I think this kid can be a real star. Makes bad decisions sometimes, but scared their defence all night with his pace, power, and downright cussedness. Can only get better. Ran through walls at times. Umerah: 6 - Looked good when he came on. Another one who was a real handful. Chicksen 5.5 Looked short of match practice and fitness, but seemed reliable and sensible.
And, one other thing:
Steve Avory: 9 - Obviously makes the kids practice penalties, because none of them, including Konsa, a defender, looked like they were going to miss...
