Ricky Holmes (ed. Pg 9 - interview with Rich Cawley)

Why because a 30 year old wanted a chance to play in the championship for the first time. Ricky Holmes was excellent until the last six weeks when he was average.Redrobo said:
I don’t want to see him anywhere near our club.cafcfan1990 said:Holmes just behind Taylor and Grant would be magical.
He Didn't deserve abuse when he came back.
Ricky time has gone now at Cafc but I for one wish him well.21 -
I swear I read somewhere that Bowyer thought Holmes was a trouble maker and didn't want him?0

Good player when we had. Not sure he's the same player, suspect we had him at his peak the first time around. Wanted out when we needed him, don't see we owe him any favours. Don't need him anymore anyway.2

He said something like, Holmes wasn't that popular in the dressing room.Pelling1993 said:I swear I read somewhere that Bowyer thought Holmes was a trouble maker and didn't want him?

I don't believe he implied trouble maker, just Billy Big Bollox.Pelling1993 said:I swear I read somewhere that Bowyer thought Holmes was a trouble maker and didn't want him?
But you're right, having been given the opportunity to bring back Holmes, Bowyer passed on him.

Not to mention all the injuries that he caused with players slipping on rogue alice bands!5

Let it go. We had him at his best. He's done now.10

Holmes fit would walk into our side. Class player.1

Maybe I just have poor/selective memory but I'm having a hard time remembering if a player coming back for a second spell with us has ever really been successful or anywhere near as good as the first spell?1
-
Miss his free kicks but he wouldn’t get in our first 11 now in my opinion, despite how well he played against us this season.0

In the diamond formation that we play he would not get in the team ahead of Jonny Williams... But lets not kid ourselves, any formation with a wider player (i.e. 4-4-2,4-3-3 etc) he would be one of the first names on the team sheet.4

Good God......how,many fucking midfielders do you want. We already have Williams, Reeves, Clarke, Fosu, Aribo, Lapslie & Morgan. That's without the defensive ones in Cullen, Beliek & Pratley.
Holmes hardly set Oxford alight either. Give it a break lads. He left. He's gone. Get over it.6 -
Man bun.
Enough.3 -
Great for us, wish him well. Don’t need him now (may next season if RD is still about and most of our team have left on free’s though!)2

No. You are wrong in guessing what I meant.soapboxsam said:

Because we have better players in his position, he is over 30, I do not think his personality fits our team, and he is now injury prone and we have enough of those.
I applauded his name when announced at the game as he was fun to watch when he played and I didn’t blame him for wanting a chance in the Championship, just didn’t think he would be good enough.0 -
Holmes is on a two and a half year deal at SUFC - so he still has 18 months left on pretty decent coin.
Nobody else is going to pay him what he is on there so he may as well sit it out and collect the cash as he will be 32-33 by the time his deal ends there.
Excellent player on his day but it's pretty clear that we got the best out of him whilst he was here.5 -
Liked him, saw him possibly at his peak, lets move on, although best wishes Ricky.2

Ricky Holmes has a really annoying haircut, which prevented me from being able to fully enjoy his excellent performances last time he was with us. Only big guys can pull off a feminine haircut like that, Andy Carroll for example. Ricky Holmes looks like an air hostess from behind.
I wouldn't have him back until he's visited a proper barbershop (not a hair salon). But then at the same time, when you take away the hair, sometimes you take something from the player - think of the short-haired Fernando Torres at Chelsea compared to the flowing locks he had at Liverpool. Trevor Sinclair became a far less exciting player when he left QPR and cut off his dreadlocks. The Netherlands would not have won the 1988 European Championships if Ruud Gullit had been sporting a short back and sides.
Too risky. He should be sent back to Sheffield United, accompanied by a hand-written 600-page note from Karl Robinson which basically says, "we're sending you Ricky Holmes back."24 -

Paul Mortimer. But then he is the greatest player to have ever donned a pair of football bootsManicmania said:Maybe I just have poor/selective memory but I'm having a hard time remembering if a player coming back for a second spell with us has ever really been successful or anywhere near as good as the first spell?

Some have done well in their second spell, e.g. Killer or Mortimer though I'm not sure if it exceeded their first spellManicmania said:Maybe I just have poor/selective memory but I'm having a hard time remembering if a player coming back for a second spell with us has ever really been successful or anywhere near as good as the first spell?

Chris Powell? Twice came back as a player and was alright.Manicmania said:Maybe I just have poor/selective memory but I'm having a hard time remembering if a player coming back for a second spell with us has ever really been successful or anywhere near as good as the first spell?
Him scoring against Coventry was one of the best loopy moments I've had as a Charlton fan albeit a meaningless goal

Joe Gomez.
It's just not happened yet.

If extended to management then surely Karel Fraeye would top the charts ??Manicmania said:Maybe I just have poor/selective memory but I'm having a hard time remembering if a player coming back for a second spell with us has ever really been successful or anywhere near as good as the first spell?
