Would somebody confirm whether this season is now over or do we have to wait for the UEFA Champions League play off final....its just that I wanted to know who this new signing is (or have I missed the announcement?).
In the post match interview Alan Pardew was asked about this signing and he said that it didn't happen, but there might be one maybe two signings in the next couple of weeks.
Frankly, this announcement that the club were going to make a bold signing to show the fans how strong and positive everyone is about next season has become a bit embarrassing. Everyone got all worked up about who it might be and then it falls through. The message it gives to the fans is that, just like last year, the club are unable to get quality signings over the line.
Much better to excite people with good news than to disappoint people with the failure to deliver. My advice to Alan Pardew - keep your gob shut until it's a done deal.

Does make you wonder whether this "mystery signing" was dependent a certain team being relegated.
Maybe but whatever the circumstances, I just wish Pardew had kept his mouth shut...it's made him look a right plum - Dowie was bad enough as a soundbite merchant, we don't need another
Agreed. as much as i like a lot of what pard's says, when it comes to transfers i would like to get back to the old days where nothing is said until its signed.
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]Spot on. When you see them grinning in front the West Stand holding a replica shirt then believe it. Till that happens it's all just paper talk
I thought that it was when someone posts and says LOCKED ON, or FACT at the end??
[cite]Posted By: razil[/cite]with respect Henners it was the club and Pards touting a new signing not the papers...
absolutely but he did say he was "trying to sign". Until a deal is signed, sealed and delivered it's not FACT, done deal or locked on (and not even then if it's Carlos Tevez you are signing but that's another story) and all statements should be taken as intent not promises.
[cite]Posted By: razil[/cite]still not paper talk though..
Agree, paper talk was the wrong thing to say. Talk then perhaps.
Personally I'd prefer it if managers left it until we have actually signed some before saying anything but Pards may have had his reasons. Maybe he wanted to give the press something positive to write about in a relegation week, to give the fans a boost or just wanted to gee up some of the players.
None of that is inside info BTW just my speculation
I think Pards was right to try and gee things up a bit in such a depressing week. Good to let the fans know that he is not sitting back waiting for things to develop but is already out there trying to make things happen on the transfer front. Once we get new blood on board all this will be forgotten.

Ever since I was a young boy growing up in Buenos Aires, it has always been my dream to play for Charlton.
