I can't for the life of me see this 12M valuation - fook me, Walcott went to the Gooners for that 2 years ago and still does next to nothing. The board will be underselling him for that.
excellent comment WCO but i genuinely cant see us getting £12 mill, simply because of whats available on the continent. i know benty is better than shevchenko but until benty signs for a 'bigger' club we wont reap his true worth, the same way as ipswich didn't when he came to us!
He's only worth what someone is willing to pay. A lot of Prem Clubs will have a lot of money to play with due to latest TV deals & Takeover Boards who promised Big spending. If I was Charlton & they are resigned to losing him I would make sure as many teams as possible get involved in a bidding war to drive the price up over & above what he is actually worth.
I think we have to be realistic, i would be amazed if we got anything like £15m for Bent. People were quoting that sort of figure for Andy Johnson last year and what did he actually go for...
[cite]Posted By: pete_tong1[/cite]yeah cheers for that Murray still no public apology for this season's many mistakes. You should find the dosh to keep Bent to rectify your mistakes.
Come on behave. He's personally put in somewhere near £15million. He's the best Chairman this club has ever had. The board made mistakes that's clear but they didn't do it with the intention of fucking up. Move on.
I think people are calculating his value against old transfers. Surely the point is that there's lots of new money floating about next season, clubs can either use it to invest in facilities/cap ticket prices or spunk it on higher transfers/bigger wages.....no prizes for guessing which way it'll go. Bent for £20m+.

You could be right but there are a lot of variables. If Bent is sold late in the summer in a high market then we could be talking about £15 million or above. For an early sale £12 million is probably a good price. Not sure how quickly we need to sell. I suspect that the earliest possible sale would be Bent's preferred outcome - don't think he is a guy who likes uncertainty. But on the other hand I believe that he wants to go to a club that can be seen as a tangible step up so will wait if say Liverppol were interested. The club probably favour an early sale as it will give a lot more certainty to the finances and the available transfer budget. If we sell late then and struggle to clear out most of the dead wood then we will find incoming transfers are similarly slow.
Despite having the utmost respect for Benty, i thought its important to consider the most important factor of the lot. That what is done has to be right for Charlton.
THere's a possibility we might be getting too fair and sentimental about all this. The exact state of our financial position should dictate whether we trade or not, and when we trade. It is the club's duty to drive as high a fee as possible if we financially need to offload, but if we don't, don't forget the player himself was more than happy to sign a new 4-year contract just 10 months ago. He would of known after the upheaval there was a possibility we may of gone down this season. Whether they had an agreement in place (sign the contract, if we go down we'll let you go straight away) is another thing.
But lets not forget we have to do what is best for our club, not Darren Bent.
True Medders but it is the end of the season now so he does not have us over a barrel like Parker did. We all know he is going and he has enough class about him to know that the club have to get the right deal so I doubt we'll see any Parker like hissy fits because he will know he will get a good move in the end. Best thing about Benty is that he will ALWAYS be welcome back at The Valley and will NEVER get booed or abused even if he scored against for the Spuds or Spammers. He has done the right thing by Charlton and we will do the right thing by him.

this comment ormy, is spot on. He is a top geezer and i will give him a chris powell like reception!

While I agree with the sentiment, that's not always the case is it. What if Liverpool or Man U were to offer £10m but west ham were to offer more where do you think he would go?
He wouldn't be winging his way to Upton Park that's for sure....
[cite]Posted By: pete_tong1[/cite]They will sell him cheap like they always do.
OK, little game. You say what you consider to be the minimun price that we should take ie what would not be cheap and we then see what he does go for if we do sell him.

now now, let's all be friends

Darren Bent (36 goals in 2 seasons in a crap side) = A HELL OF A LOT MORE THAN FECKING THAT.
Andy Johnson had only had ONE good year in the Prem, Benty has had two on the spin.

Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle, Man Utd, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea will all be interested in Bent so that will drive the price up even further.
I would be amazed if he went for less than 15 million in the current market where next year's bottom Premiership side get 30 million quid.
