Confused about Davies

Just wanted to say that I am now thoroughly confused about the Billy Davies situation.

At the Fans Forum Richard Murray said Davies was offered the job, asked for 24 hours to think about it and then turned it down without explaining why. However, Murray said, that the club basically heard it was because Davies did not want to follow Curbs and that he was also unimpressed with the quality of the squad.

However, reading through these court reports, evidence from Davies' agent suggests that the real reason he did not come was because he wanted his money mainly in the form of a basic salary whereas the board wanted to pay him to a significant expense in win bonuses.....

Did Murray not want to say this at the Fans Forum? If that is the case, then he should probably have said "there are reasons but I can't or prefer not to go into them."

I can't believe Davies financial demands would have been crazy (he was at Preston (skint) and went to Derby (who can't even afford to give him an assistant boss) so why the hell could we not reach a financial compromise? It just does not make sense to me.

He may have been holding out for more up front and less bonus and thus turned it down at that point in the negotiations but if it was really a job he felt made for and could take the club forward, he would have stayed in negotiations. RM would not have let him go if the sticking point truely was based around this bonus issue.

In any negotiation, if parties really want to so something, they'll find a compromise. Clearly Charlton wanted him, but you have to conclude that he didn't want us. Maybe the win bonus issue was the catalyst for him thinking about how he might improve on what Curbs achieved and that was the clincher.

I suspect that the Agent is giving the technical answer that the two parties didn't reach an agreement on the financial package and things were broken off at that point. In truth Davies didn't want the job and Murrays likely to be right that the reason was he felt that he couldn't improve on Curbs achievements.

Murrays reasons make more sense when you see that he decided to go to a club in a much less advanced state than Charlton, where he clearly could become a legend if he gets them back to the Prem and keeps them there.
  • I'd agree with Bing...there was also the question of the set up with Andrew Mills and Les Reed etc also appointed, which Davies would have had to have worked under and so failing to reach a compromise on the salary/bonuses is the nice way that both parties have of walking away.
  • Yeah, it can't have been purely money related because I doubt that he is on much more at Derby than he was at Preston.

I just can't believe that we were offering him less than Derby or less than he was on at Preston!!!!
  • you cant touch Murray with a barge poll you should know that by now.
