I'm not a huge fan of the monarchy. In fact I think the whole idea of an individual, granted judicial power "by the grace of God"; the sectarian rules under which the monarchy is controlled (eg being forbidden to marry a Catholic); and the supreme folly of a succession arranged by accident of birth instead of any meritocracy are all reasons why the monarchy is an archaic, preposterous and ridiculous institution.
However, Queen Elizabeth II has carried out the role magnificently. She's a brilliant example of someone committed fully to their duty. British people of all ages are - rightly, in my view - hugely proud of her and the way in which she has selflessly undertaken her role, decade after decade.
If we have to have a monarch, we couldn't have wished for a better one. Long may she live. I believe she'll be the last female monarch, so it's fitting that she's been such a great one.
