The attached squad picture may be of some interest........
This was the only season that Peter Shreeves - later to have a significant managerial career at Spurs - was on our staff.
Of those shown, Les Berry became a solid long serving club player. Tutt and Penfold looked as though they might go far until injury ended their careers. Hart drifted quickly into non-league soccer after a few first team outings. Jennings got a pro-contract but never featured even on the subs bench in his only season at that level.
There has already been a feature on Ben Odeje. Going back over the archives it seems he broke into the Youth Team at 16 years old in 1971/72, after representing England at Schoolboy level and played, at least initially as an amateur. Rather oddly, considering how highly he was rated, he didn't score too many goals in his first season. Theo Foley picked him as sub for a League Cup game v Mansfield Town in September '72. With Charlton 4-0 up after an hour Odeje started limbering up for his debut only for panic to break out as Mansfield scored three in a row. Instead Odeje stayed on the bench as Charlton desperately hung on for a narrow win. After a further season in the Youth Team he wasn't offered a full professional contract and left the club.
Anyone know what happened to Harry Powell, Alan Pacey, Mark Wright, Peter Mill and Malcolm Bailey?
