Motta didn't have a clue about protests..

Until Boro match, or so he says in newsshopper.
http://m.newsshopper.co.uk/sport/14341225.Charlton_Athletic_defender_did_not_know_why_fans_were_protesting_during_Boro_win/

Further proof that either:

1. The protests have not adversely effected the players.
2. The protests have been shite.
3. Motta is lying in an attempt to steer clear of the politics.

Just sayin.

  • I doubt players care too much about the politics surronding the club particular people like Motta on short term contracts. Fair enough really. You do wonder though, what players like Jacko and Solly are thinking. I imagine they hate Meire and Roland.
  • Bit like him not having a clue about his positioning at Brentford!!
  • Bit like him not having a clue about his positioning at Brentford!!

... and MK Dons and Middlesbrough.

He's knackered after an hour. Can't get back into position and drifts into midfield. At least Riga moved Yun over to help him through the last half hour yesterday.

Where's Solly when you need him?

Why would he care? He'll be on his toes in a few weeks. He probably doesn't even know who the club captain is.

I only come on CL for your comments, absolute don of comments.

Motta is class. 1 goal conceded in 3 games thanks to our loan players. The state of the club has nothing to do with him or any of the loan players and that's fine.

None of the back four yesterday are on loan.

    Fanni is...

I would imagine that Riga and KM have told the players to concentrate on their performances and what they do on the pitch- I also wouldn't put it past Pinocchio to lie to the players ( certainly the newer ones) about why the fans are unhappy!

And Henderson, is it only me that thinks it's suspicious they are all out injured? Jacko was certainly running around fine at his 'Johnny Jackson academy' when out injured.......
  • Really like Motta, can't believe he's being dug out this much.

    Your not alone in that.

Adequate replacement for Chris Solly who despite only being 5ft 3 is always going to be a tough act to follow.

He might not be the quality of Scott Parker but once again he's going to be another tough player to replace when he goes / retires

What about JC and CH ?
  • I quite like the way Motta plays, often providing an attacking outlet.

He seems more a wing back than a defensive full back like Fox.
Likes to get forward and exploit space, and overload his opponent fullback.

Also seems to me that Boro looked to stop that, by in turn overloading Motta with both their winger and LB pushed up and overlapping yesterday - so obviously he was going to struggle a bit one versus two.

There was often little defensive cover for him until Yun switched wings for the 2nd half.

  • Motta is as cynical as I have seen in a Charlton shirt. That I like.

What I don't like is his propensity to get caught miles up field and then take a bloody long time to get back.

I doubt he's cheap and will be gone in the summer after our glorious leader leaks a story saying we've offered him a 5 year deal but he chose to move on.
  • Dont worry he'll be back in January on a 2-year deal after playing in The People's Republic of Godknowswhere for a few weeks.

He hadn't had a job since last 1st July; I guess he's quite pleased to be here and getting paid.
No doubt he's trying to earn a new contract.

And of course our glorious leader will promise him the earth - and in the summer he'll be told to jog along.

  • Motta clue?

  • I like the way Motta has played purely because he has been very positive. The hardest thing to do when you are low on confidence is to be positive. Motta has led the way in that respect. He may be a liability in defence but at least he is positive!!

That's ok, as long as he's only a liability in defence!!! Phew - I was really starting to get worried for a minute! Laugh? I nearly went to Ethiopia!!

What's the situation with Motta then? I thought he was on loan too.

Further proof, too, of the inadequacies throughout the club.
Surely the team run by the new(ish) Head of Comms should be briefing the CEO on what's being said on here and elsewhere and, in turn, she should be briefing the manager who should have warned the players not to have been distracted by any actions by fans and not to get involved in any confrontations with pitch invaders. The club knew enough to get specific signs up on the big screen after all.
Yet Motta says he knew nothing!?
  • I think he said he wasn't aware of the protests before he joined, but now he is but he doesn't really understand why and/or doesn't want to get drawn into it.

    Maybe I misread his comments.

    Nope. Quote from linked article:

Marco Motta admits he did not know why Charlton fans were protesting during the 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.
  • Here is the quote of what he actually said from the linked article:

He said: “I arrived here a few weeks ago and I don't know about the situation [protesting fans], I need to think only about the pitch - that’s my job.

“Unfortunately, it was not good when I saw this but I don't know why there is this situation.

“We played very well today and usually I only think about my team.”

He didn't know about the situation when he joined, the protest especially the beach balls was effective and now he knows there is an issue. He didn't and probably doesn't understand why, he's not prepared to make a negative comment but he wants to focus on the win.

He does seem to be full of fight and enthusiasm which can be infectious. I do worry that he always seems to be on the verge of receiving a red card. As for not knowing about the politics, I can understand that. Riga is constantly saying that his job, and that of the players is on the pitch. I should imagine they turn up to training, do what they have to do, then off to the golf club.

  • I'm not overly surprised that he wasn't aware, and despite all the theories being thrown around I'd say it's probably pretty normal. He's been here, what, 3-4 weeks now? He doesn't seem to be on social media, which I think makes a big difference. English is not his native language, and chants and songs can be difficult to understand for us native speakers. And I think it's most important to remember that at the times when the protests are going on, directly before/after matches, the players are presumably locked away for pre/post match preparations.

Also, lazy stereotype ahoy, but given he's from Italy, it's entirely possible he thinks supporters protesting is just part of supporting a club.

When we signed him, I definitely thought we'd got a player. Saw a fair bit of him at Roma and Juve, and a little at Watford, and there is definitely a player there. It should be noted he has played most of his career as a wing back, and add to that the fact he hadn't played competitively in 9 months you can understand him not being match fit and his positioning not always being good.

That said, I thought he was very poor on Sunday, including going forward. There were a couple of times where he got the ball on the right touchline ~35 yards from goal and tried chipping it to the 18 yard line to...I'm not sure really. I suspect that Mak might have been due to start, and that was a tactic they were looking at for him, but it just ended up looking daft.

Still think and hope he can play himself into form. I think he provides good competition for Solly, who is very solid defensively but who I think lacks a bit going forward. He also offers the option of playing three at the back with a natural wingback.
  • I'm not surprised. Motta often plays like he doesn't know what his left or right foot are doing.
