"Webster" Ruling

Anyone think this is just another "player power" thing that is going to cause the game a bit of aggro?

Scotland international Webster successfully invoked Article 17 of the Fifa transfer regulations to cancel his contract at Tynecastle.

For players under the age of 28 the protected period is three years of a contract, and for those 28 or over when signing the contract the protected period is two years.

A 15-day notice period has to be served before a player can invoke the ruling and then a compensation fee must be decided.

The player is then free to find a new club, providing the switch is to another country.

Wishart denied that the ruling would plunge the game into chaos and argued that it would help reduce "exorbitant" transfer fees.

  • whilst its annoying to see the game changed, there can be no denying that contract rules for footballers are completely out of touch with the rest of society. We find it hard to see, but to them football is work, and no one should be tied to a job years in advance if they are unhappy.

    Or am i wrong ?
  • I agreee with yuo AFKA - a football club can still sack a player so the 4 year contract they just signed means sod all yet a player is expected to honour his.
  • I think this is the beginning of the end. Next they will have to abolish the transfer window, because it affects when "employees" can change "companys". Followed by the shift in power towards the big 4, as they have the money and commercial power, Transfer fee's deflate, wages sky rocket, smaller clubs can't compete as the bigger clubs take whoever they fancy and end up with enormous squads of 100 players.
  • It is bad for football, because it puts transfer fees at risk and these are the only effective way of distributing money from the rich to the poorer clubs.
  • Hi Cunningstunt - aint that Chelsea already? lol

I totally agree with what ur saying, its been heading that way for years.
  • In fairness, it's probably how it is now. With the amount of money in the Premier League theres no hope. I wish I knew what football was like Pre-Murdoch to be honest (In terms of football, not being peed on while standing on a crumbling terrace, then recieving a kicking walking out of the ground)
