HeadlinesCharlton Athletic lose 5-0 at Huddersfield Town, with Stephen Henderson to face the press on his own
Karel Fraeye has been sacked (He was the man hired on a interim basis whilst the owners searched for a permanent manager), the search for the new Charlton Manager is finally set to begin, with interviews to be arranged (Although hopeful Managers will have to pass the Network Test before reaching the interview stage)
IntroductionIt’s never dull supporting Charlton that’s for sure, the last few days have been a laughable blur with many fans firstly trying to remember which sadistic person took them to their first Charlton match, and then secondly, trying to get their own back on them for of years of pain…!!
A 5-0 defeat against Huddersfield (almost a year on from the same drubbing at Watford, with it being a late kick-off there were no laundry baskets to return Karel Fraeye to the Valley so he was forced to endure four hours of silence with his players that he hung out to dry… Many fans felt it would be the end of the road for Karel and finally at 5pm yesterday, that was confirmed with the Belgian being sacked and returned to the Belgian Third Division...
The new interim is the old Assistant Manager:
Wim De Corte… Nope know nothing else about him either, how long will he be in charge… Nope don’t know that either. Since Roland Duchatalet took ownership of our great club, it’s usually been less than 24-hours between sackings that the new man has been announced (Only Guy Luzon look longer to arrive because of work permit issues), we’re into unchartered ground with the Belgian owners, we’re at a pivotal part of the season, our rivals seem to be picking up points, whilst we appear to be floundering… At present, the Belgians have been quick to make decisions… In a sense let’s hope they don’t dither this time
The OppositionName: Hull City |
Manager: Steve Bruce
Ground: KC Stadium |
Nickname: The Tigers
What a difference a couple of months make in Football… In June the fixture lists were released and we as Charlton fans trembled at the thought of our first two home games coming against ex-Premier League opposition in Queens Park Rangers and Hull City, even more surprisingly we ran out comfortable winners on the opening day of the season (against the former team)… We’d done it once; we couldn’t do it again could we?
I guess the writing was on the wall for the months ahead at this match, we began the match so well yet a poorly timed challenge on Cristian Ceballos meant we’d lost our first long term casualty, that first half saw the Addicks huff and puff yet just couldn’t find a way through, early in the second though and we’d find our breakthrough,
Simon Makienok leaping to score (an emotional) first goal for his new side, for the rest of the match we comfortably held our lead but then… at the death… disaster struck!!
Nick Pope would make the first mistake of the season, spilling a strong effort straight in front of the Hull Striker who would level up on 88-minutes… then even worse, Hull would take the lead in injury time, all that hard work gone, but no!! – The scorer was offside and the Addicks could breathe again
Pope in spilling his shot, may have robbed us of three points yet in getting a knee in his face ensured that there would be eight long minutes of injury time and at the death our blonde Scandinavian twins (Yes I know Iceland isn’t part of it but shut up) combined,
Johann Gudmundsson, almost as short as Chris Solly would stoop to head in a winner at the death… PANDEMONIUUUUUUUM!!
Couldn’t happen again could it?
Charlton Team NewsBecause the club have decided to move the Press Day to Friday, and because impatient CharltonLifers want their preview (
@RedChaser am looking at you here), it means I’ll forever have to guess at which players may be fit per each match… With Wim de Corte and Jason Euell taking charge of this match the only thing I can confirm is that Reza Ghoochannejhad is suspended after being sent off late on against Huddersfield…
Jordan Cousins is hopeful to return in Midfield whilst both Cristian Ceballos and Igor Vetokele will make appearances (and that they’ve not had set backs to their injuries) after failing to make the bench on Tuesday night.
Henderson
Solly … Sarr … Lennon … Holmes-Dennis
Gudmundsson … Poyet … Cousins … Harriott
Vetokele … Makienok
Substitutes Bench: Pope … Johnson … Williams … Ceballos … Jackson … Vaz Te … Umerah
Prediction
Hull City 1-2 Charlton AthleticCouldn’t happen again could it…? – I bloomin’ hope so

Hull City 4 Charlton Athletic 0
Karel's, er Wim's, erJose's team. In no expectation of any points, BUT hopefully a better performance than the last 2 dismal games3-0 Hull
only a 2-0 defeat.
I sit here just a few miles south of the mighty Humber .. it's colder than my ex wife's heart ... snow and VERY black, cold skies and fierce arctic winds are forecast for the weekend in the Humberside region .. lovely stuff that should really keep us all hovering around the fireside (those that still aint got the ol central heating that is) rather than facing more torture and possible humiliation at the Kentucky Fried Chicken Stadium or whatever it's handled ..
I fear that us Addickteds are gonna feel even colder at 17.00 hours on Saturday .. after the shambolic performances on Tuesday I have absolutely no idea who deserves selection, even Mr Reliable Henderson had a shocker...
Can frisky José bring about a miraculous change in form and endeavour in 48 hours ? .. keep watching to find out
IF IF IF we get so much as a point I will be Uber der Mond as Patrick Bauer might 'ave it .. is he bloody fit yet ?
1-1
........ and smack straight into a brick wall
Heart says 1-1
Head says another heavy defeat. 4-0.
“He has stepped up his training, has had no reaction and is eligible for selection at Hull on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, Ademola Lookman, Patrick Bauer, Alou Diarra and Ahmed Kashi remain sidelined.
Lookman is still recovering from the hamstring injury he sustained against Wolverhampton Wanderers last month but has begun running again.
Bauer is due to see a groin specialist in Germany over the weekend and Diarra has a small fracture in his right foot, which he picked up at Bristol City on Boxing Day.
Kashi is four weeks post operation and will see his specialist at the end of the month where he will hopefully be given the green light to step up his rehabilitation.
