*** Consortium lines up CAFC Bid ***

edited May 2007 in General Charlton
Have I missed something here or not?

Taken from the BBC Website:

A consortium is lining up a takeover bid for newly relegated Charlton.

The bid is being put together by a group of Middle Eastern and continental businessmen who had previously looked into acquiring Liverpool.

They are particularly keen on Charlton because of their London location, which is suitable for expansion and offers commercial and marketing potential.

Charlton also own their own ground in addition to having a well-established academy and facilities.

The consortium has always been determined to make the bid regardless of Charlton's Premiership status, although relegation will of course affect the price.

It is possible that a bid will be tabled shortly after the end of the season.

  • No thanks, I'll stick with Richard Murray et al
  • Very doubtful that someone would buy a relegated club? If we had stayed up then yes but we have some belt-tightening ahead on significantly reduced income so, although our value is reduced for a buyer, that is because they are buying a far less valuable asset and are buying more in hope than anything else.
  • Assume it's been reported on the BBC's Inside Sport programme tonight.

The timing couldn't have been more ironic, but on face value could be a real factor/distraction in the summer's rebuilding process.
  • And we'll all get free season tickets in 2008 -2009
  • Depends if it's done quickly, if true.

Part of me wants to say yes, cause we need more money
  • If I had loads of money to waste I'd waste it on Palace.

You haven't missed anything, this looks hot off the presses, which I take to mean it is a planted story set to role the minute our "inevitable" relegation was sealed.

Something tells me, perhaps more in hope than knowledge, that Murray et al. won't accept this kind of investment... that is, investors who were interested in Liverpool (and possible other clubs?) and, having been knocked back, have now turned their attention to CAFC. I would hope any investment would tie into people who have some kind of interest in the Club and the Area (ie like those investing in the Dome etc., potentially). But, of course, those are thin on the ground and I am sure any potential investment would be carefully considered.

Buy on the cheap, cash in when we go back up.

The story's from Mihir Bose, the BBC's sports editor who's very well connected in sports business circles.

Murray's call, of course. But without quotes from anyone involved in this consortium, the story's a bit of flier. And was probably always going to happen in the event of relegation.
  • you couldn't exactly blame the Board if they decided their time is up, which I'm not saying it is, but If they thought that. I'm sure they'd only accept an offer that guaranteed the future of CAFC and that they thought was in the best interest of CAFC. If true I'd rather they remained but somehow attracted in some outside investment.

    ++++++

What on earth is that supposed to mean? I think its, "I have no idea why they would want to buy them so let me type out the first load of bullshit that comes into my head!"

  • The cynic in me says "They're particularly keen on Charlton because of their London location, which means lots of lovely land for building expensive yuppie flats on"
  • I don't want any flash money. Tell them to get lost.
  • im a bit worried about all this to be honest.
  • Just dawned on me that this story's been buried by the BBC sport website team, which would suggest that they don't think much of it.
  • or they have all gone home to bed and will pick up and run with it in the morning. I mean, how many Charlton fans are up at this time in the morning ?
  • i second the no thanks.
  • Yes if they have the dosh to spend.
  • no thanks
  • Investment yes, full takeover no thanks.
  • Hopefully they will through money at us and let Mr Murray and his team still run the place

or possibly re-structure the finances leaving us even more in debt ???
  • If true I would be against it. At least the present board do care about the supporters, proof the competitive season and match day ticket prices which they have reduced for two seasons now. Things like opereation Ewood and the valley express coach services. New Arab and European owners as reported by the BBC can only be interested in taking money out of the club. Image how much they can borrow on the value of the Valley and the Eltham training ground leaving the club with large debit and not owners of their own ground.
This would be end of Charlton.

I'd be dissapointed if the current board took this offer and walked away. They've been 100% behind Charlton while the going was good they should stick with it while times are more difficult.

    Like the supporters are doing.

The board and us have been through a hell of a lot worse than the position we are in now, the only people who think this is the end of the world are the post 98 supporters.

We are still in a far healthier position than the majority of clubs in this country (including those in the Prem) and we will be back.

As for the takeover, no thanks.
  • My instinct would usually be to dismiss this.

However when Curbs left (and I posted something at the time possibly on netaddicks) I heard from a friend of a friend who plays golf with Richard Murray that he was looking to get out.

The guy who spoke to me is not one for idle tittle tattle.

    I'm worried.
  • Its been denied.
  • Tempted but not if we were to sell our souls.

I'd rather be in the Fizzy Pop than support a poor mans Chelsea
  • No thanks.
  • To wording was "we haven't had an approach" thats not to say there isn't one. I'm happy for funding, not so keen to sell lock stock and barrel to non Charlton.
  • Chinese Whispers ?

    Not for me thanks !
