  • E I E I O

Up the football league we go, and when win promotion, this is what we'll sing... WE ARE CHARLTON, WE ARE CHARLTON, PARDEW IS OUR KING!
  • Absolutely, no one's died. In a perverse sort of way, this has been the most enjoyable season for a good few years. I'm not too disappointed that we've gone down and even if we'd survived, we would have struggled next year with this crop of players. Going down will give us the opportunity to re-group and get rid of some of the so-called superstars. Let's bring in a new crop of talented hungry youngsters, some experience and some decent loanees let's and push on.

The future's bright. The future's Red n White
  • I agree with VM, but I've just read on the BBC that Pardew wants to keep 90% of this squad!!!! has he gone mad.
  • I've just seen that too and thought it must be a misprint. Surely he meant 9%. Unfortunately we'll lose players we'd rather keep, Benty and Young, and keep players we'd rather lose, Faye and M Bent, because no-one else will want them.

Of those out of contract (Kish,Lisbie,HH,Holland,Hughes,TEK,JFH,Sankofa,Myhre) TEK and Holland, maybe HH, can stay if they want but the others can go IMO.

Big squad changes this summer but it's long overdue. Doesn't seem in can be done whilst in the PL.
  • Absolutely agree LargeAddick. Let's be honest, even if we'd stayed up next season would have been more of the same because this squad is not good enough and we would have found it really tough to bring in quality players.
A season or two in the CCC will allow us to rebuild and hopefully come back stronger into the Prem within two seasons.
That's not wishful thinking, its realistic given the record Pardew has and the fact that we are now a club that is of Premiership size.
  • agree Ormiston. It's not going to be easy but I'd be disappointed if we are not back in two seasons. Despite ID already spending some of next years budget the fees for Bent and Young plus the parachute money will give us more financial clout than most other teams except West Ham. The squad needs a rebuild and at least we have the right man to do it.

Did you expect him to say "I can't wait to get rid of this bunch of wasters", then?
  • ummm yes, because on the whole its true.
  • yeah but 90% ? At least say 70% to give us some hope. Half of 'em don't care anyway.
  • Maybe being a bit hard on them, but it didn't feel like '99 when Kinsella and co were left slumped on the pitch at the end against Sheff Wednesday.

Yes, but he also knows that the more he can screw out of other clubs for them, the more he has to spend on their replacements. So they are all world-beaters that have just been unlucky to have been caught in the turmoil of the managerial changes at the club this season - at least until we can get shot of them.
  • Since Christmas when Pardew took over we have shown mid-table form so why do we want to lose all these players - there are people who will not be renewed but aside from being diplomatic I think Pardew will be looking to build a squad of 22 that must get us promoted within 24 months - so Kish and Holland can do a job there; Sankofa did a job when Young was out and if Young wants out then so be it.

The point is that it was the club management which was a shambles from June-December. I reckon our defence can do a job and would Carson come back? A midfield four from Thomas, Ambrose, Rommadahl, Kish and Holland (+Song?) will be OK.

It's only up front that with Darren Bent going and no other real talent where we will have problems next year and whenever we get back - so we'd best go and find the next Tevez / middle East billionaire to sort this one.

I'm not saying keep with exactly the same mob - anyone over 28 who can't lead and get stuck in should go - and if we're worried about returning to the premier league with a similar squad, well we won't - because the likes of Kish and Lisbie will get a one year extension - tops.

The only new players with class we will see next year will be loan signings and unknowns - since we won't have the Sky money. What will see us bounce up is tough tackling, good leadership and a little bit of flair and pace - as Daren Bent said in the programme "half the time in the Championship you can out pace and out muscle the defence."

    Here's to free football in 2008/9 :-)
  • sorry I disagree in that Romm,Kish and Ambrose wouldn't hack in the Championship.
  • Doesn't matter about Dennis, he's off anyway.

Kish has done well at Leeds and would be OK there and Ambrose needs to toughen up to be OK anywhere.

    -)

That's no good. They won't be motivated to play. I'd get shot and bring in fresh blood that's hungry and eager to prove themselves. Ambrose is Ok because I think he has something to prove and moreover he cares (like Holland who should've been POTS)
  • Forgot about Dennis wanting out. What I'm saying is that West Ham used the like of Chris Powell to get them promoted and we need to keep whoever in the squad to ensure we have four decent strikers and four decent central midfield players.

I'm hoping that a mix of guilt trip to get Charlton back + no-one excet the bottom clubs coming in will ensure that Pardew can build a nucleus of 16-18 players with maybe only 3 or 4 new faces.

Whether they are good enough once we come back up is not the point because we will then have sky money + hopefully new investors to help us push on.

Whatever happens the ride is a laugh
  • SR, the problem is that once DB goes then we have NO decent strikers left at the club. We will have Lisbie, M Bent, Dickson and Walker, not exactly inspiring is it?

As for midfielders, well, Ambrose, Thomas, Reid, Holland, Hughes and Kishishev might do an OK job in the CCC but Faye will be shite and Song ain't playing in the CCC. We still need a real Kinsella/Parker "heartbeat" type player but I don't know where we'll find him from.
  • As I was walking up Floyd Road after the game tonight a few Spuds fans were singing "were all going to Europe, Charltons going to Scunthorpe La La La La" etc. I could not help think of that old joke (which the over 30's would probably remember)

"if Typhoo put the tea in Britain, who put the c*nt in Scunthorpe?"

    Well it amused me anyway.
