South London World Cup of Pubs

For those on Twitter, there's a poll/game to find out the best pub in South London on Deserter.

In the first game that finished earlier, the Kings Arms in Waterloo suffered a shock defeat at the hands of The Gladstone in Borough.

Game 2 is on now with the Blythe Hill Tavern facing The Capitol, in Forest Hill.

  • I'm assuming The Dacre Arms in Blackheath and, of course, The Long Pond in Eltham, get byes through to the semis....
  • Id have a little bet on The Pelton Arms as well. I'm not on Twitter Vincenzo but do follow you chaps on FB, is there a way to vote on there?

Don't do twitter but I did read somewhere (probably What's Brewing) that the Gladstone was under threat of closure.....which would be a great shame.
  • That's a no contest, Bylthe should walk it.
  • Blythe winning by a mile. 76% so far.
  • Pelton Arms should win, but am glad no-one in the area spends their time reading 'blogs'.

Why are you glad no one reads 'Blogs'? Am I missing something again?

Sadly, not. They fell in the preliminaries. Tough on two pubs I wanted in, along with the Plume of Feathers, but there are no easy games at this level.

I'm afraid not, @red_murph Anything more complex than a Twitter poll was beyond us.

It is under threat and is likely to close. Read all about it here: http://deserter.co.uk/2015/09/pubwatch-the-gladstone-arms/

The Glad also appears in the most recent issue of Private Eye as one of many pubs being acquired by a property company with dodgy links to Zimbabwe.

  • I don't expect the Park Tavern to do very well against the Pelton, as im sure most people will vote for the Pelton.

I popped in the PT the other day, it was like a morgue with 4 people reading newspapers and no one behind the bar. After waiting 5 mins for someone to appear i gave up and went to the GPO instead which was very good.

It's the same company (to all intents and purposes - Golfrate/Mendoza) that bought the White Swan, which at least now has an excellent leaseholder.

Cheers for the info...as I said before a real shame.
  • Beer Rebellion in Peckham is good but it's part of a chain so I'm not sure it should count.
  • Well, it's a South London microbrewery chain, so it's not exactly the evil empire. It's only a bit of fun anyway.

Further to my earlier comment re The Dacre Arms in Blackheath - I visited this evening, as I do after every evening game.
For those who knew and loved it, this pub was an institution in this part of SE London. No more.
Since the passing of the venerable owner some 2 years ago, this pub has gone downhill quicker than our beloved football club.
The beer is shit and is getting worse with every visit. The current staff are not trained in changing a barrel, so half the beers are off on a regular basis.
Unsurprisingly, two thirds of the old clientele have disappeared leaving the place a soulless old shell.
Don't bother visiting. Along with our club it is in the hands of people who don't give a shit.
  • I am really gutted to hear that @mid_life_crisis. I've always loved that pub, it's a classic backstreet boozer, tucked away, with decent regulars and ales.

It seemed to me the family were keeping the place much in the tradition of the owner who passed away, last time I was in. That was about a year ago. I'm really saddened to hear that's not the case.

  • Tournament favourite The Pelton Arms v The Park Tavern is going on live now for twitterers.

  • Its a tricky one as I tend to drink more in the Park Tavern nowadays then the Pelton due to my location. But honestly I just took one look at it the other day and felt I had to talk in a whisper so left. Especially as im not very good at talking in whispers plus the fact there was no fecker behind the bar.

I'd love to rant about my beloved ex local The Star and what has happened there but walls have ears and all that!

  • The Park Tavern (pre revamp) was the best pub around

A very good pub being destroyed by an absolute idiot.
Enterprise have been bombarded with complaints and the other pubs on Plumstead Common are benefitting.
  • Are you still going to the Green Man Star or around the common? I miss seeing everyone in there. Still go in on the very odd occasion but makes me feel a bit sad when i do.

I reckon you could write a book on what's gone on there.

Has anyone got any cool knitting patterns? I'm knitting a jumper to wear at the football and was looking for a pattern for a Charlton hat to go with it.

    No, sorry mate.

I popped into the Dacre Arms last week - first time in about a year. My first pint was well off (but they did exchange it) and it was much quieter than normal - it was a Monday night, mind - one severely drunk man and his mate, and two old racists at the bar (one of them kept farting loudly).

It did feel a bit different...
  • What's the address??? :-)

Green Man. Really nice pub but gets very busy.
