  • I make SHG right on this one, Ruskies won't be taking the piss anymore, and yes NATO collective self defence could be invoked.

It's at least 100km from the closest part of ISIS territory.

For reference, Northampton is about 100km away from Charing Cross.
depends on what the turning circle is like on one of these jets. without power steering I can imagine it being a right arse
  • Not hard to maintain that mentality at all when Putin spins everything to suit his purpose. Not sure what you mean regarding Turkey's size ?

As stated above the Russian jet would be in and out of that small pimple of air space in moments. Could it be that they have been flouting the rules for a while, been warned and continued to flout the Turkish air space ?

There had been a comment here about Turkey being a tiny puppy or something similar. If Turkey was ever to join the EU (which I doubt), population wise they'd be a major force.

The Turks are a proud people, and their leader is almost as nationalistic as Putin...

Sorry I didn't see the post regarding Turkey's size. Agree Turkey is a big player. Huge standing army. (10th Largest)

A fighter jet would do that in about 12 minutes
  • Is the red line on that map not the flightpath? If so its was in Turkish airspace for a while.

Sure, but if the red line on the map was the flightpath, then 100km is the closest it came to ISIS territory (the circular part to the right of its flightpath). ISIS were not its target.
  • Russia denying it's jet was in Turkish airspace. Someone knows the truth.
  • Perhaps they'd run out of Vodka and were popping down the 7-11

I can't think why a a Russian jet would be 12 minutes from the ISIS 'border' otherwise.

The white Turkish plane also goes out of Turkish air space from what it seems - or is that the sea and open to all ?

  • Crazy.

I'm trying to get my head around what this place will be like in 100 years.

Nah thats Croydon as it looks now...
  • That was my point

Ah thought you was saying it was Croydon in 100-years

The question was - what will this place look like in 100 years ?

    The answer was - Croydon
  • Putin "We will analyse everything in detail and today's tragic events will have significant consequences including for relations between Russia and Turkey."

So where will the Russians go on holiday now?

And my response was... It looks like Croydon now, rather than in 100 years!!

  • If the Russian plane that was supposed to be in Turkey airspace actually crashed in Turkey rather than Syria or at least one of the two pilots who ejected from the plane came down in Turkey rather than Syria I would find it a lot easier to accept Turkey's claims.
  • Looks rather unhappy doesnt he... Bit like a Charlton fan who's been told that they're only part of 2% of fans that are protesting on Saturday

To be fair Putin always looks like that, he makes Tony Mowbray look a cheery soul!
  • Daily Mail has put up a picture provided by the Turks... I guess the light blue border is Turkish Airspace with the plane clearly being in its airspace, surely though the Aircraft wasnt in there for 10-mins!!

I've just gone on Google Maps and its takes about 10-mins to drive that part of Turkey (Not in a straight line either) So a plane would have done it a lot quicker

From that image alone he's gone in there at least twice though. If he was warned...

They send fighters along our coast as well, presumably testing our responses (usually F1s scrambled). I guess we have more patience than Turkey.

Looks in pain when he smiles... Are we sure he isnt a Charlton fan?

Politically Turkey is nowhere near as relevant as a member of NATO as historical cold war foes the UK and US and thertherefore such an incident would likely be far more significant and Iinflammatory to Putin.

Not forgetting also for all the sabre rattling over the past 18months or so it doesn't appear that Russian planes have ever breached UK sovereign airspace unlike what is being alleged by Turkey.
  • If NATO planes did this for every incursion into their airspace it would make Putin think twice about further expansion into Europe. Whether this incident is an accident or not NATO should back the Turks to the hilt and announce that it was a deliberate act. The alliance has looked weak for too long and our enemies have taken note.

Yes of course that's true - it really would be inflammatory if we shot one down outside of our airspace.

Don't like where all this is heading.
