The week that was - Monday 2nd May 1983. Charlton 3 Wolves 3

At the risk of running short of material in the future, there are a glut of goodies to list in the next few weeks so excuse me.

Monday 2nd May 1983. Charlton Athletic 3 (0) (Smith 55, White 57, Hales 67) Wolverhampton Wanderers 3 (3) (Kellock 10, 24, Eves 33). The Valley. Att 7,935

Charlton: Johns, Curtis, Dickenson, Aizlewood, McDonald (Gritt 80), Berry, Smith, Harris, Hales, White, Robinson.

Wolves: Burridge, Humphrey, Palmer, Cartwright, Pender, Dodd, Hibbitt, Clarke, Gray, Eves, Kellock. Unused sub: Butler.

Referee: L. Burden (Poole, Dorset)

Charlton, outplayed and 0-3 down after just 33 minutes, staged one of the greatest and most memorable fightbacks in the clubs history. Wolves were promoted as a result of the point they earned at The Valley.

  • Great game that was. Barrelload of aggro afterwards too.
  • I think Wolves had the better right back that day !
  • looks like lennie lifted a couple of their players.
  • Whatever happened to John Pender?
  • Home & Away, thanks for your good service, go and have a long soak in the bath and we'll see you in August*

    * Welcome to emerge for the play off final date :-)
  • A great game.I do remember it well, we wersr shit in the first half, and really turned it around, one of the first games my Dad did not take me to and I was allowed to go with mates.
  • 30 years ago this week. What happened to the winner? We had 23 minutes to get it.
  • I went every game that season and like this season a lot of teams could have been relegated in the last week.We desperately needed points on this day.

I remember being despondent at half time but elated at the end after the fight back.

I recall the celebrations of the travelling Wolves fans, but in hindsight this was their last big moment for quite some time because after this promotion they had successive relegations,we are now observing a repeat of this part of footie history 28 years later me thinks.

It was after they dropped to the third tier that we managed to buy Humphrey and Pender very cheaply.

It goes to show in football there are always cycles.
  • Subway feckas everywhere so I was told
  • There must be footage of this somewhere, if it was the game that saw Wolves promoted?

  • A vital point. Remember the game very well.
  • I can remember charlton fans leaving at half time what fools. When we got our second goal you just knew that the killer would get the equaliser. At the final whistle derrick dougan was liffted on to the shoulders of the wolves players to celebrate their promotion-my how times have changed!.
