First-Team Physiotherapist Erol Umut provides an injury update ahead of Saturday’s visit of Brentford to The Valley….
Thankfully, we didn’t pick up any fresh injuries against Preston last night and we expect to see one or two bodies back for Saturday.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson missed out after he picked up a dead leg against Reading, but he should be OK for the weekend.
Ahmed Kashi is struggling with a heel problem. He’s seeing a specialist on Wednesday afternoon to determine how quickly we can get him back without having any further reactions. We’re trying to get to the bottom of the injury, but we’re hoping to have him back sooner rather than later.
Stephen Henderson played for the U21s on Monday and that was an important run-out for him to get his minutes up after a prolonged period of time without a game. As he’s only just coming back, we have to protect him and watch him carefully before throwing him back into the first-team picture for 90 minutes so we don’t risk further injury. Part and parcel of any rehabilitation programme is to get them back out training, get them full strength and supervise their minutes, otherwise we’re putting them at a high risk.
Hendo will be the first one to tell you he wants to play, but that’s a decision we need to make between the coaching and medical staff.
Simon Makienok has already played more football this season than he did for the whole of last. He’s just recovered from his hamstring injury, but if we throw him in the deep end and give him loads of minutes, we’d be taking a big risk.
We’re trying to control his time on the pitch, but it makes it difficult when he’s one of our most influential players. We want him to play as much as anybody else, but we’re having to be careful. It will be a progression over the next two or three weeks where he will play 20, 40 or 60 minutes for example, so we’re having to try and use him to suit our needs.
Igor Vetokele is still doing rehab as he recovers from his groin problem which has been there since pre-season. He’s seen a specialist and we hope to step things up towards his return soon.
It was pleasing to see Reza Ghoochannejhad back on the bench after being out since the trip to Nottingham Forest. The specialist said it could take him up to 12 weeks to return, but because of his sheer hard work he’s come back after only nine.
He is another who will need to get some minutes over the next couple of weeks.
Johnnie Jackson made his first start last weekend, but considering the injury he had and how long he was out for, we have to be careful with how we use him. Like many of these players who are coming back from injury, we know that these are important games, but we have to look after them and be wise to avoid problems in the long term.
Cristian Ceballos remains in a protective boot. He picked up a stress reaction in his fibula, which is very similar to a fracture so we need to treat it in the same way. With an injury like that, you need around three months to let it settle down. He’s currently at week eight, so he will remain in the boot for the next two or three weeks.
Finally, Regan Charles-Cook has been missing for a few weeks after picking up an ankle injury in training. It was very swollen, but he’s been training for the last week so now he’s looking to be involved in Jason Euell’s U21 team on Monday.

Maybe I'm just getting more cynical in my old age but this just looks like badly done crisis PR.
The club have an OS so why not use it.
Communicate to fans, explain what's happening, keep people informed. Fans can still complain and be unhappy but this way at least they know a bit more.
Sure the intentions of the comms team/Erol etc. are sincere.
That's sounds an honest assessment from a medical man
and is also the 1st time i've heard what's the problem with Kashi.
In the last couple of years we are paying a high price in getting so many
players who had played few games in the season prior to signing for CAFC, consequently they are picking up injuries and the hard yards you have to achieve in the championship are taking there toll quite quickly
There clearly is a case for saying that, given the lack of depth in the squad, the club might as well concentrate on getting the first XI back to maximum strength by mid-November, even if it means running a greater risk of losing every game in the meantime.
Well done to Reza to get back to full fitness within nine weeks rather the originally thought twelve though
Now they do and it's described as crisis PR.
And perhaps it does explain a little bit about the starting 11 v bench.
Or maybe the physio is in on the great conspiracy against the fans as well now.
For all you IA-haters who say there aren't many 'formats' available for general injury updates, well I could have posted a link to a Neil Redfearn video interview about their injuries, and then Charlton would have produced a video instead.
IA, setting the agenda since... earlier today
;-)
This post was just a response to the comments I reckon.
Before that it was 2011 that we last went on a run that bad, which led to the complete rebuilding of the squad and promotion the following season.
So this kind of bad run is not normal and does lead to major change.
