    Won 1-0 21/02/81

  • I think we won 1-0 (I was at the game) it was just after they had narrowly lost 4-3 to Newcastle in the FA Cup.

Actually, I think we had lost 4 3 to them earlier in the season. Just checked on line and they had lost 4 0 to Newcastle after drawing 1 1 at St James.
  • Cheers Guinness...no didn't have a bet on it lol. Visited my sister yesterday and she had kept the programme as it mentioned my dad in it (it was the first home game since he passed away). The programme was probably mine but many years ago I gave them all away but that particular programme stayed in the family. I could not recall the result but have a vague memmory of watching it from the South Stand.

If memory serves me right, the South Stand was closed at the time and away fans were accommodated in a fenced off area in the east terrace.

Remember the Exeter away game...went by coach seem to remember quite a few 'lads' in fancy dress, a good turn out that day (quite a lot of mini-busses I recall).

You could hear the police escort of the mini buses from about ten miles away. Not sure they'd been drinking, but it wasn't in Exeter

  • I was there.

Took the wife for a romantic afternoon out. Third division football. Still together though so I must have done something right presumably.
  • Phil Walker scored our goal in the 1.0 win at the Covered End. We were in the back section of the South Stand terrace at the time. Can't remember why exactly. Maybe they were doing the seats at the Covered End then?

Went by train to the away game 3.4 defeat, cost £6 return from Charlton station for under 16. Remember their side terrace was called the Cowshed. We were on a bad run at that time, losing to Exeter, Colchester and Millwall and West Ham in the League Cup. Then a 0.0 draw at Barnsley set us on a run of 18 or 19 games unbeaten and we were top of the league.

Won 1-0, goal by Phil Walker.......was also filmed by BBC and shown on Match of the Day.

It was my first match, so I remember it well! Stood on East Terrace with my Uncle.......this is all his fault!!

  • Funny, I thought Exeter beat Newcastle and lost to the Spuds in the quarter final that season, Tony Kellow was their main man if I remember right. Mists of time and all that, mind you we made the 5th round so it was a strange cup that year...

Appearances on Match of the Day were about as frequent as Halleys Comet, nice to chalk up a win for the watching millions. Phil Walker was brilliant on his day, another player who sadly suffered too many injuries.

You are right, I followed Exeter in their cup run that year and went to both the Newcastle and Spurs games. Think they also knocked out Leicester. Tony Kellogg was a milkman from memory.

Read this just as I was thinking it was on the Big Match.
Tony Kellow indeed sadly dead at 58.
  • Apart from the humiliating loss in what looked like a non-league ground, I remember the small open away terrace had a hedgerow all along the top and it was swarming with bees. Spent the whole match swatting them away.
