How many members does this group have ?

They have a couple of hundred followers on Twitter

  • People on here may take the piss because it's football

But I guarantee behind the hard man football shit, there are people who are registered and who may even post on here, who have a Son/Daughter/Other or perhaps extended family member who perhaps come under LGBT+, so how about think about what people are saying

Charlton is a family club that shows respect to everyone (bar wall' and palace)

Ultimately my guess would be the whole idea of the group was for a support reason, not to get into peoples faces like LOOK WE ARE LGBT AND PROUD BLAH IN UR FACE

    One word

    Respect

Just like how straight people are respected

Because someone is lgbt don't make them any different to you

    Yeah, it does!

I do genuinely wonder why, when someone sets up a group or initiative to support or celebrate one section of the community, people from outside that group feel compelled to ask the "what about me, what about my type of person?" question.

Bit like girls joining the cub scouts, how stupid is that
    It's not stupid at all.
Plenty of girls have joined the cub pack I help lead because they want something they feel is preferable to being in the Brownies.
Talking as an ex beaver, cub and scout (G57 Greenwich Skip), I woulda hated girls joining my troop, I mean, how does one clothesline a girl during a game of British Bulldog? Imo make the brownies and guides more exciting for the girls and let the boys be boys in the scout movement
  • I don’t think there is anybody precluding anybody forming a Charlton supporters group. I wish them well – hopefully they can attract a few more supporters.

One thing that always puzzles me about homophobic people is why they are so offended? How does a Charlton Athletic LBGT group affect anybody? I can see why the club supports it. If there are issues that affect LBGT people who support the club, then the group is a good platform to bringing them to the club’s attention. There is a Charlton disability association, which serves this function too. The cheap easy retort so many people make to attack these groups are, well why can’t I form my own Charlton group then, maybe aligned to a political party for instance as a random example. But where you can explain the use of a Disability, LGBT and even a BME group (if we had one), you can’t for the party political one. Your politics have no impact on your matchday experience for instance. It is not about tokenism, it is about making the club a better club to support for all its supporters.

What consenting adults do that doesn’t affect or concern me doesn’t bother me.

  • I'm an advocate of unisex toilets personally, but in answer to your question: Do you have friends/family/potentially documentation or certification that would, in the event you decide to make a legal challenge should you do this and be kicked out/banned, support your gender identity as being a (presumably pre-op) male-to-female transexual? If so then fair enough, you have a case for discrimination, but somehow I doubt that you have any "evidence" suggesting you're female...

I don't need evidence that I'm female. I merely have to identify as one. Your attitude reeks of genderphobia
  • So as well as a Red/ white and Black day are we going to have a Rainbow day? Are we going to have people with clip boards outside ticking boxes?

  • I do always genuinely wonder what the response would be if someone wanted to create a say 'English, White and Proud' Charlton supporters group??

Would it be accepted in the way this group rightly is by the majority of people or would there be a negative OTT response to what is a legitimate reason on the face of it for creating a group? And before someone says 'Well go and create one if thats what you want" - well thats not the point at all really. I'm just interested in how certain people get offended at certain things and can be quite hypocrytical on these matters? And I beleive the police attention for one would be all over the aforementioned group.

If they did form such a group - what would the group's objectives be? That is the point. If people were discouraged or intimidated or discriminated against for being English, white or proud when visiting the Valley, I would be all for the formation of a group.

There are other reasons for groups. Geography for example. There is a reason to form such a group as it is amn opportunity for likeminded fans to get together with others in their area and there are things like Valley Express that may impact on them.

If there is no reason to form a group yourself, you shouldn't get on your high horse because others think there is.

    Me too.
Why would there be a Rainbow day? And why would people with clipboards stand outside the Valley, ticking boxes?

I am reminded of the true story of an employer who was asked to provide a Muslim prayer room for its staff. They were asked due to the fact that staff had to travel to another building to pray, and provision of the room would provide benefits for all, including the employer in terms of productivity. So the employer provided said room. Then a mini campaign within the company started for a Christian prayer room – the argument being - if the Muslims have one, so should the Christians. This resulted in the company agreeing to provide a room for Christian prayer and contemplation. But whereas the Muslim prayer room was used by many staff daily, nobody used the Christian prayer room and it was always empty.
  • Anyone see the nice story about the 6 year old British lad who has who is now the youngest person to pass the exam to become a Microsoft specialist? His parents are Asian, so the BBC thought it necessary to send along the BBC Asian Network to report....

    Why?

I was a sixer and I think I was G57 if it's the group that met at Charlton Manor School, so I know what I'm talking about as well.

    Where does it end?
  • Maybe the BBC didn’t send anybody along, but a reporter from the Asian network heard about the story. Why does this need to trouble us? – If that isn’t the reason, there usually is one. It is just a report about a clever kid.

    Yeah, but everyone knew the
51st Greenwich Scout Group were the elite, a bit like the SAS as a modern day comparison , at least in the late 50s/60s.

    St Richards Church Hall
    Swallowfield Road
    Charlton

Not sure about the 6 year old passing the Microsoft exam, seemed a bit of a sad individual, far too busy tearing around the estates on my bike and playing football to be concerned with that type of nonsense.

  • There must be a reason for LGBT to start this group out the blue, if so it is there an ongoing issue at the club and have they contacted the club about the homophobic abuse etc they have been receiving and what are the club doing about it. On the flip side if they are not experiencing any homophobic abuse etc then is there a need for them to have a group in the first place.

This isn't always the reason why LGBT socials or clubs are set up. LGBT bars or LGBT societies at university or within political parties just want a safe space to be open without 'fear' of being abused, and also to meet up with people in their community. Some people aren't comfortable with being openly gay unless they're with others in the same boat.

I'd hope in 50 years time there won't be any need for LGBTs to feel they want a separate group but clearly judging by the reaction from a minority of keyboard warriors I'd say that's reason enough to support them doing this.
  • I don't understand how they can be so easily offended by someone shouting at a football player something like 'poof'. People seem to be offended at everything
