Charltons penultimate game in the 68-69 season was the fifth of six games played in the space of 16 days. The Addicks missed out on promotion to the top flight, finishing third, behind Champions Derby County and Crystal Palace.
Matt Tees, Ray Treacy and Harry Gregory all recorded double figure goal hauls for the season.

Also this year: Newcastle United won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup over two legs (now the Europa Cup) and Swindon Town caused a major upset by defeating Arsenal in the League Cup Final at Wembley.

  • Now that was a comfortable home win.
  • Definitely at this game but despite the score, I can't recall it. That was not a bad season overall despite the Nigels going up.
  • I remember we calculated that two 4-0 victories and the stripey Nigels losing their three games (by 1 goal) would have seen us go up on goal average. This was the first win but sadly we blew it in the last game against Preston (missing two penalties and losing 1-0), and the pressure was off. We finished third, six points off second.
