Moorfields Eye Hospital - A Huge Thank You

I underwent a cataract op at Moorfields At St Ann's in Tottenham yesterday.

These days a fairly routine procedure taking about 20 minutes, however, due to the nature of the trauma I suffered about 18 months ago, the op lasted nearly 2 hours!

So, a huge and heartfelt thank you to Bruce Allan and his team for their skills, professionalism and kindness to bring the op to a very successful conclusion.

After about an hour i was becoming a little stressed by the length of time and the discomfort I was feeling , so Bruce Allan called in a lovely young nurse who sat down and held my hand for the rest of the operation.

Wife and I were then giving fresh sarnies and tea in post op and left armed with a bagful of drops and tabs to take in the coming weeks.

Too much is heard these days about the shortcomings in the NHS, but this was care at it's absolute best.

BTW, walking back to Seven Sisters station on our way home can anyone tell me if N15 has become hoodie capital of the world?!

Glad it went well @mistrollingin I had the pleasure of working at Moorfields for a while (in a non-clinical role) and the staff there are a great bunch. If you felt it appropriate, I'm sure that an email to the Chief Executive, John Pelly, would give him a very welcome opportunity to pass on your praise.
  • Cheers Davo, I'll do that today.
  • Had mine done a few years ago, fantastic result, but now I am going back to Maidstone Hospital for my sarny and the lovely nurse in that order. At 77 I like to get my priorities right.
  • Glad it went ok but hate to break it to you but this is a palace forum.

    lol, Very good Dave

  • I had to go to Moorfields about six months ago and ended up having to go in next day, a Saturday, for emergency laser surgery. They were great, couldn't fault the treatment. Glad to hear that all now okay for 'mistrollin'.
  • Had an eye op done there when I was a little boy... From what I remember cant rate Moorfields high enough, great place to go to get that sort of thing sorted
  • Is it true they have a referee's ward there?

Nice one Misty. Hope the recovery is swift and pain free.

The NHS is a political football, always has been but stories like that cheer me up.

Thanks Smudge, Ben became a daddy for the first time on Wednesday, a lovely little girl.

Yep, the two lads sure look out for me.

I'll try and get in the Lib before the season ends so hope to see you then.
  • Was up at moorfields - old street - on Tuesday, and I have to say the bunch of people who looked after me were superb. It was only Outpatients, but each person I spoke to explained in detail what was happening, what was happening next, and how long the process would take. Was in 0830 out by 1000 with 5 tests along the way. Well done the NHS
  • Moorfields .. probably THE best eye hospital in the world .. I'm please that all went well for you @mistrollingin
  • Interestingly, although still part of the NHS, Moorfields has a tremendous income from both private patients and from gifts and trust funds .. everyone knows or should know that the 'gift' of sight is the most precious of all the senses

They also run a private hospital in Dubai and have a profitable pharmaceuticals business. Together with the private patients income these generate a good profit which is used to enhance NHS services/treatments. Interesting mix of commercial enterprise and public service working in harmony.

When I was there on a short term IT 'mission' some 9/10 years ago, the pharma business was in the process of being set up .. I'm glad that it has proved successful .. a LOT of money was spent during the implementation .. the Moorfields 'model' is perhaps the way for the future, but is really only appropriate for very specialist centres of health treatment excellence .. but shhhhhhh .. don't let on about this to the CL Soviet of the Socialist Workers Commune ((:>)

Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. Working men of all countries unite.

But back on topic - Moorfields is most definitely one of the jewels in the crown that is the NHS. All the best @mistrollingin for a pain free recovery.

Hmmm, have you ever been poached slowly and painfully in your own capitalist juices?
  • they wrote to me shortly after my treatment asking if I would consider making a donation - I was more than happy to oblige.
