Memory Test - Which ground have you seen Charlton at the most?

edited February 2015 in General Charlton
Right a little light relief away from the doom & gloom of what is becoming of our club under its present owners. My old man has recently begun to try and work out how many times he has seen us play against each football league/non league team (as some of them are now), at their ground.

He was lucky, or sad enough, dependent upon which way you look at it, to have recorded each game he went to from a young lad in the 60s, up to 1982. Thankfully after that, the late great Colin Cameron produced a brilliant book recording every Charlton game up until Oct 2003 (I think). He was able to use that and memory, to work out which clubs he has seen us play at, and how many times.

This is a work in progress, and he has only just started, so it will take some time. However I thought I'd start this thread so that other lifers can share their visits and offer up their tallies. I know some on here are absolute die-hards and are likely to offer up some pretty impressive stats. He's done a few clubs so far, which means I know how many times I have been to some clubs/grounds as I often went with him.

Apologies if this has been done before, and for some of you I'm guessing you might not have the time or inclination to go back down the years, but let's see what sort of responses there are. I'm starting with the following, and will add to it (and do my old man's when he has finished).

Aston Villa - 4
Southend - 3
Watford - 2
Portsmouth - 6
Birmingham - 2
Swindon - 2
Norwich - 4
Palace - 3
Reading - 2
Crewe - 2
Barnsley - 2
Port Vale - 2
Tranmere - 2
Stockport - 2
Grimsby - 2

The rest (below) are all one visit. I have more than one visit to places like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea etc, I just need him to work them out and tell me.

Swansea
Burnley
Bournemouth
Brentford
Rotherham
Brighton
Wigan
Blackpool
Bristol City
MK Dons
Preston
Oldham
Walsall
Doncaster
Rochdale
Peterboro
Notts County
Scunthorpe
Colchester
Yeovil
Wycombe
Plymouth
Bury
Exeter
Stevenage
Oxford
Dag & Red
Carlisle
Barnet

I look forward to reading which of you has done 12+ trips to Middlesboro (old and new ground count by the way), as I think they are one of the teams we've played the most in our history.

I think I posted on that one, cheers Paulie. Was hoping to get an idea of who has been where and how many times, as I bet we've got some real stalwarts on here with some decent stats. Shame that link doesn't let you tally number of visits up.

Wembley twice, to see us play Blackburn and Sunderland.

  • I have done 58 out of the 91 in current FL.

    Southampton been to 6 times.

Only ground I have seen Charlton win at twice.

Estimate badly when procrastinating one day, that my record for seeing away wins is 13%. I average 11 a season for last 9 years.
  • Off the top of my head, not been to any away ground to see Charlton more than 3 times, which would be Watford, Spurs and QPR.

  • Off the top of my head ones over 3 times

    Sheff Wed 5
Lofted Rd 4 (QPR and fulham, lost every time)
    Selhurst 6 (palace and Wimbledon)
    Bournemouth 4
    Watford 4

    3 times
    Norwich
    Hudds
    Millwall
    Boro
    Fulham at Craven Cottage
    Colchester
    Ipswich
    Brentford
    Derby (soon to be 4)
    Leeds
    Brighton
    Blackburn

Plenty of 2s and 1s of course.
  • How can you guys remember all this - do you record them somewhere? I can name the grounds I've been to but not the number of times with any more accuracy than 'once' or 'more than once'. Could be something to do with being a doddery old fool - but I refuse to accept that!
  • edited February 2015
Well, according to my spreadsheet, top is Portman Road (8 times) and second is Elland Road (6 times).
I've been to both Carrow Road and Vicarage Road 5 times each.
Oddly the highest for London teams (watching Charlton) is Wimbledon - 4 times - but two different grounds.

Edited to add I've been to 87 league clubs (+Brescia) and 105 league grounds (+Wembley).

I'm waiting for my dad to do his, so I can then do mine. But you are right, given that he's been going since the mid 60s, memory alone will not be accurate. He had written down every game he had ever been to up until 1982. After that we use the Colin Cameron book as mentioned above. I'm sure it can be done from memory for a few of the younger fans, but some trips just merge into one for me.

All the times we played Villa in the Prem after we beat them 4-3 in the relegation season that I went to, I can't remember.

I know we could end up with a few on here (we have already) that will have some pretty impressive tallies.

I look forward to hearing yours bob

  • Crikey, I'll have to do some digging to come up with exact numbers but Maine Rd/the council house must be no1 with Hillsborough a close 2nd and both will be well in to double figures
  • Brilliant thread!

    Real Charlton Life Anorak stuff.

First away match January 1968, away at top division Coventry City in the FA Cup (lost 0-3).
The next season at Brian Clough's Derby County, the FA Cup games at Palace and Arsenal, Palace and Millwall of course in the League ........... I'm going to have to sit down with old fixture lists and away programmes.

It's going to take some time.

    Same here.
Don't know numbers but would guess sheff w and Portsmouth would be up there for me.
  • No idea - all I know is i'm on 99 grounds visited in total at the moment and seeing as I can't make Derby or Blackpool away this season, I think the Aviva in June for the paddies v England will be the big 100 for me.

On recent form i feel like my answer should lie in Yorkshire but think it could be Fulham or Palace.

The Old and New toolboxes and Sellout would be highest for me - and Belgrove Road for many pre-season friendlies.

  • this could take me some time to work out, don't go away as much now, but did plenty of years of home and away back in the 80's/90's.

no time to sit and count now, but there are some impressive totals on here!

I think it's them and Pompey. Great tally @Simonsen - let's keep them coming everyone, I appreciate it might take a bit of time but it's an exercise I enjoyed, I hope you all will as well
  • Can't remember each individual visit, only which grounds I have been to (about 65), so in answer to the thread title - Millwall, at least ten times between the two grounds.
  • most are single visits but most returns to watch Chalrton play at Fratton, Loftus Road and Craven Cottage, probably 3 each. Never seen CPFC play at home but did attend Charlton and Wimbledon games there during their respective tenancies, only seen us play at the toolbox if you count pre-season "friendly".
  • Very impressive Simonsen.
I cant wait to see Covered Ends tally .
