I'll never be embarrassed to be Charlton. Be I'm finding it a hell of a lot harder to relate to other than a bond and friendship with fellow fans.
Life sucks. Made even better today by Chelsea not winning. I was on £345.25p for a £1 stake on my Premiership accie.
So all round a stonking Saturday of football and me sitting here feeling like I've been mugged and then received a bill for it!
I'd be more embarrassed by your prem years when you bussed in pikey gillingham fans from Medway. "Come and watch Christian Ronaldo okay at the Valley". Talk about selling your soul.
@colin1961 I don't know whether to admire you, laugh at you or pity you. Whatever occurs you defend the regime, I suppose you think RD has to deliver at some point, well he has he appointed Riga (then looked elsewhere for a manager). You keep saying about new signings etc, but unless I have heard of them and know their merit, I doubt they will lift the club's and my current malaise.
Miiiiiiilllllllllllll
Owners, managers and players all come and go, the club is the only constant. There have always been far more lows than highs, it goes with the territory and this is another dip in the curve of fortune but I'm still proud of where I have come from and always will be. There'll never be any hesitation from me when asked 'so who do you support then' to answer 'I'm a Charlton boy'! COYRs.
Am always PROUD to support Charlton.
Example: To slaughter Lepoint and make up your mind after 20 mins is absurd.
To sing you dont know what your doing after 2 games in charge is just as absurd.
Yes at times i am embarrassed of our so called fans.
What did I see? Well, the train passed a rusting monstrosity called the New Den. I started to think about Millwall. Their ground, their history, their fans and their league position. Suddenly the world didn't seem quite as bad after all. So, if your feeling depressed think of life as a Lions fan. Exactly.
Never.
I can only speak for myself but I've been on this roller coaster since 1967... more lows than highs and I share the same pain as expressed on here BUT, for god's sake let's give the new manager and the players a chance and please let's not go into self-destruct mode, i.e. booing your own team.
I've always been proud to be a Charlton supporter despite everything... it's part of my identity. You be embarrassed if that's what gets you through; I'l remain proud till the end.
My concern at the moment is that something 'feels' wrong. The team that won the League 1 title were a bit special - and, arguably spoilt us. I remember the fans chanting "We've got our Charlton back" when promotion was clinched. Little did we know what lay ahead. I don't think that team was particularly fantastic in terms of ability and I would concede that we were probably lucky to win the title so clearly and with 101 points. However, it was a team and manager who wanted to win and work together and, consequently, often picked up results when there was nothing in it.
That team has been deliberately dismantled for whatever reason. Maybe, Kermorgant was asking for too much money. Maybe, Morrison isn't as good as Bikey. Maybe, Stephens had days when he disappeared. Yes, I get too that Jackson is a few years older and past his best too. The thing is - and, here's the rub- that that team did its best 99% of the time. It's why we came 9th after promotion. Again, you could argue that 9th flattered us, but you can't argue with the fact that we did indeed end up 9th.
I don't feel that the current bunch are doing their best 99% of the time - frankly, I wouldn't want to put a figure on how often they are doing their best. Whether that's the fault of the owner, the squad, the manager or the fans, you can argue all day (and we do!) but something 'feels' wrong, which is where I came in.
